Can anyone recommend some synth-heavy tracks that could be compared to the last two or three albums by Gary Numan--where the hooks are huge, little supporting melodies abound, sound design is creative, metal-isms sometimes appear as big riffs, guitars aren't verboten, etc.

I really love a piece by LOOM called P. It shows that its a bad name for the band and even more for the piece. I do have the CD, as I once mastered it, but to find any resources online is hard. Discogs lists 283 artists and single letter titles are even more hopeless...
But finally I found it listed at least: https://www.discogs.com/Loom-Loom/release/2841311
I am not sure about Gary Numan though, as its without singing, but it is synth heavy for sure...

Yamaha GX1 is great for heavy synth music. Doesn’t get much heavier than that.

I’m assuming you’re also familiar with Nine Inch Nails. This is an interesting chain of “who inspired who”. Trent Reznor of NIN was inspired by early Gary Numan. In later years, Gary Numan was inspired to change his sound by way of appreciating Trent Reznor’s work.

Also check out early Stabbing Westward.

Well, now I know where that “I love you” sample came from. I first heard it on an old 4-channel MOD. I also heard a 4-channel MOD version of “Oh yeah” (also by Yello), and it sounds like the original song was literally made in a tracker. I guess triggering Fairlight samples via MIDI isn’t too far off from trackers. In fact, the Fairlight has a sequencer page, no? Looks like a tracker screen...

Not so metal but check out Synthwave and it’s branches. There are some dark and heavy stuff out there.

Lots out there. Here's some that are quite different from one another at one level. Comparable to Numan? Sure, each in their own way. I personally prefer these artists, myself.

The Anix
Comaduster
Dead When I Found Her
Gunship
Ivardensphere
Stairway Maze
Project Pitchfork
VNV Nation
Encephalon

A coworker turned me on to the band, Magic Sword, earlier today. Try the album, Volume 1 (Deluxe Edition). If you aren't grinning by the middle of the first track, synth probably ain't your bag! :-)
