If you are looking for working drum sound for the "Swedish pop phenomenon" kind of music our "Treated Drums/Ethnic RnB" set could be the right sound selections (drumwhise) for you. These kits are produced by Swedish top producers working with both “A-teens”, “E-type” and others.

It seems like you have the tools but you may lack the "fuel" for them, sound that inspire you to create music in these genres...

Simplicity, melody and focus on the small details and not too much, less is more.
That could be some guidance maybe...

You do not need all softsynths and samplers to create; you need room for creativity and a setup you can handle and the right sounds but not "2045 snares" and "3785 kicks" to choose from...
That end's up with to many options and to much spilled time.

from what it looks you have been on the old kazaa and torrent sites, im gonna suspect that you own NONE of the above if you say you know nothing, they are all software synths. alli can say is, its cool to use them if you are a poor student and cant afford them just yet but if you find yourself using the same plugins and effects over and over again please buy them and of course credit any samples you do you...oh and make sure they are royaly free.

now then having a degree in this shit i can only advise you to do the following. Uninstall everything but cubase. i have cubase v 5r4 which i bought many moons ago with an audigy2 plat live soundcard which imho is all you will ever need to make any type of music you like. people are quick to write off the old sb cards but in my opinion they get the job done and dont cost you a weeks wages if you want a really really cheap sound card get the soundblaster 5.1 platinum LIVE. I have one incase my audigy2 breaks i think i payed £25 for it. ok now with all that guff out the way

1. Learn how to write a midi track using ONLY cubase. this will teach you the value of midi. yes midi sounds crap to the people who really dont know anything about sound design. all the old console games use midi and they did a good job do you not agree? i still use midi strings and people say, where did you get that string sound from. i just laugh. So what you want to be doing is taking a simple tune may i suggest sonic the hedgehog and recreate it using the midi tracks

if you know absolutly nothing about midi then you need to realise that midi comes with everything (pros go with me on this as i dont want to get too technical) all soundcards these days come with a gm back already inmstalled on the sound card so you should have 0 - 127 or 1 - 128 instruments. yes thats 128 instruments. they contain all your favourites. So go into this i pressume ripped off version of cubase and open the midi track editor and using the pencil tool draw in some bars across the virtual scaore it gives you. play the file and if you have selected a midi voice suche as 1 - piano you should hear something. if you use track 10 of the midi tracks it should be default drums, doing the same as above input notes, play the file and you should get drums back. This is a really really general tut for making a midi note. the note may not play due to what is being used for the sounds output, but hey ive already spent too long on this post.

2. samples. plugins and whatever else. ive never used sx2 yet (anyone here want to send me a whats good and bad over 5 in their own words feel free) so im not sure how all this works

well in cubase you have some default plugins called vb bass, neon synth and some other s i cant remember. to use you first create a midi file and select the midi file to use the vsti as they are called as the output.

you will then get some different sounds, although cheesy, what do you expect for free. samples can be loaded into cubase to the audio tracks, do with these as you will.

as for wanting to sound like all those bands. forget about it for now. they recorded that stuff with some very very good producers and enginners and its hard to get those sounds using software alone (unless you start using those kids programs like ejay and that me personally goes for EVERYthing done by myself, mics, people and instruments, midi and not drag and drop a seq onto a track...ooooh that sounds good sort of approach - i await the flames)

Before you even bother with anything i suggest that you get quite confident with making a peice of music totally out of midi and using the vstis.

when using the vstis you can add effects from the send effects list and get some good results, often transforming a crap sound into something quite desirable also use stuff like modulation, pitchbend and volume in the midi control thing at the bottom of the key editor, getting good with this can turn midi into very very accurate representations of the sounds thay are trying to copy.

if there is any response to this email i may consider doing a better tutorial but we will just have to see.

sos about any typos and grammer i never checked over the doc as i typed away
