He was a big fan of scordatura. Unlike Fripp he would have a different tunings for different pieces. The concert I was attending, the violinist played 5 different violins, each with a different scordatura, friends of mine delivered the continuo... And after the break we heard Marc André with the Experimental Studio... ACO would have been delighted...; - )
This was the band...

Though this has the standard tuning...

the only audience i care about pleasing is me.
if others enjoy my creations, great but it wouldnt stop me enjoying doing what i do, if no one listened.

general question to all...

who are you?

:)
I see it like this, music is - like any other art - just a way to communicate. There are no rules on how to do that and if there are they are breakable.

You can follow standards or not, you can learn music theory or not, you can practice a lot with your(s) instrument(s) or not, everything is possible and that kind of freedom is the way to open a door for originality, at some point you have to break the rules if you don't want to end up sounding like millions of other musicians... but of course you are also free to sound like them if that's what you want.

If originality is important or not is also subjective. There you have bands like AC/DC writing songs in the same style for 40 years and for most of their fans it is better they do that than start to experiment and put some reggae or EDM elements into their music. Other bands may vary a lot from their first album to the next and the next as well.

On the other side I'd say originality is a good thing but often not really well understood, people tend to think original artists get ideas out of nowhere but they don't, they never did, they always acted like some kind of filter that absorbed a lot of art and ideas from elsewhere and just put their own part to mix them together giving them some special flavor, but I'm quite sure in most cases 90% or even more of their creations aren't original at all but taken from elsewhere, and I'm not talking about plagiarism but about communication again.

If an artists wants to communicate something he/she needs something to tell, a message, something that is there already and people can understand, even when people means only themselves. The thing is that a little bit of originality, let's say 5% to 10% inside a piece of art can make enough difference to get attention and become popular, and that is what most people actually seem to give importance too, even when the artist doesn't care about popularity the people who admire him/her care about popularity.

Most people tend to think the best artists are the most popular too: Mozart, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin... because people always seem to need to look for "the best" everywhere. But time has showed us that you can be popular also without being a great musician. So that made me think if artists like the ones mentioned in the linked article were really original or just the most popular at their time? Are we really praising their talent as musicians or painters or their talent as social influencers from the past?

On the Resurrection sonata, are the middle two strings actually swapped on the fingerboard or is the crossing at the bridge symbolic only (ie the swap is just at the bridge end)?

Post

They are swapped as far as I know...
This actually is an example for exceptional creativity without the need to pose any problem on the audience. This is partially about the sound, open strings sound different, and partially about some ways to make chords or melodies easier to play... Both is more important for the composer and the player. The audience will recognize this rather indirect, because the music adds a subtle difference to other pieces...
