Renoise is incredible
GUI amazing
Workflow superb
That piano roll tool looks horrendous though
I've made f**k tonne of albums with renoise and only wish they'd implement touch automation and not need lanes of fx commands to automate vsts

I couldn't use it as my only DAW and lack of time means I haven't given it the proper attention, but it does have great value as a way to force a new paradigm on yourself.
The shortcomings (not so much of Renoise, but of trackers in general) compared to modern DAWS means it's tough to just say "I've been doing this in Live / FL, etc., now I'll do it in Renoise" - that approach leaves you disappointed.
But to experiment with a new way of producing, the workflow kinda forces you to make different choices. It's also great (obviously) for just producing on a laptop without a controller etc.
For me (for example) - as a piano player I tend to "noodle" a lot of the same types of chord structures and melodies. With a tracker I experiment more with sample slices, odd repetitions of notes, etc. - all kinds of things.
The hardest part is that it's really almost a separate hobby, and it's competing with the rest of my music production, Netflix, work, the latest on this stupid virus...

That's pretty much why I got Redux - it avoids the need to get out a conventional DAW completely for sample cut-ups. OTOH, there are some block sequencing and arranging things you can really only do conveniently in Renoise. You have to hack something out of M4L to get the same done in Live.JoeCat wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2020 4:43 pm For me (for example) - as a piano player I tend to "noodle" a lot of the same types of chord structures and melodies. True - I own Redux, and literally keep forgetting it’s there in my toolbox amongst all the conventional shizzle.Gamma-UT wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2020 5:03 pmThat's pretty much why I got Redux - it avoids the need to get out a conventional DAW completely for sample cut-ups. i dunnochk071 wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2020 12:13 pm It doesn't, but, it's still a tracker.
Actually, looking at the GUI alone, I get a vertigo attack... how people can consider something like that "easy" is beyond me.
Well... if the concept would be appealing, then threads like these wouldn't have to be opened, I guess.
tbh it must be popular enough keeps getting updated i just wondered why , mate i used cubase and acid and reason over the years and i cant believe i havent tried trackers before the up down and the note off thing are a godsend , anyway renoise is still getting updated and theres a new update in the pipeline apparently so as long as im happy and i can make music , reading an article that mitch murder uses it got me interested , no going back now im hooked

There's no way to stop the excel from auto scrolling, even when the pattern fits in the screen entirely. That's some shit from the early '90s which somehow crawled its way into the '00s and froze there, and now in 2020 we have to like it because.......................chk071 wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2020 12:13 pm Actually, looking at the GUI alone, I get a vertigo attack...

That Redux thing actually turned me on. To bad it's just out of the price range I'm willing to pay for what I would use it for.
There are two kinds of people in the world. And you're not one of them.

Imho there are no alternatives to trackers , workflow , speed . total integration of the keyboard , effects commands etc...trying to do the same in a standard daw + piano lol is like painting a house through a letterbox .TheMaestro wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2020 10:02 am Many people have already tried Renoise or some kind of tracker. Maybe even started out with one.
But then alternatives to create music with better everything came along.
All the glitch plugins of the world are just a poor substitute for the real power of trackers , a tightly integrated sampler with precise control over samples etc...
I've been using renoise for over 15 years now , and nothing can touch it when it comes to speed and flexibility
Just my 2 cents , aphex, bogdan , venetian snares , squarepusher etc...agree
