Many hosts and plugins uses that kind of copy protection, but is it legal?
What if a lot of plugins would use dongles ? would you have to have as many USB ports as your number of plugins ?
That's just impossible, and that's not fair.
that's why it think this is just NOT LEGAL.

And exactly which laws are being broken?
My Scanner is USB. It uses one of my precious USB ports. Maybe its NOT LEGAL either.

of course but this is a matter of number of ports used.
If you have a song that uses 35 different plugins that all uses dongle, how can you do ? have 35 USB ports ??

second thing :
dongle is only a copy protection : this is not NECESSARY to use the soft ! this is an option !!

I think the word you are looking for is wrong - which is your opinion, which is perfectly valid. However, it legal for these companies to use a dongle even if they are ineffective gubbins which in no way reduce the levels of piracy in the software market.

Its a case of you makes your choice and pays the money.
If you don't like the idea then you just don't buy it, its that simple. I don't and I don't.
I have usb disabled in the bios and will not use anything usb, even a dongle.
BTW You can daisy chain up to 127 usb ports!

Can you name 35 plugins which use different dongles?
And if a software developer considers the only way to prevent his work from being stolen and redistributed for nothing is to make it dependent on a dongle, then maybe is is necessary.
So instead of complaining about dongles; go set fire to a software pirate's house....

Or you allow all software developpers to use dongles and that's just not possible, or you don't allow anyone to use it !
that's all

Then I suggest you must be doing something very wrong and need to rethink on why you are using that many!maxlef wrote:and what if i want to use MORE than 127 different plugins ?fake wrote:BTW You can daisy chain up to 127 usb ports!

Does a computer exist that will allow 127 cpu-sucking VSTs to run at the same time?maxlef wrote:and what if i want to use MORE than 127 different plugins ?fake wrote:BTW You can daisy chain up to 127 usb ports!

At any rate, I have a lot USB devices, including some dongles, and the coolest thing I've found to do is buy one of those portable Belkin USB extender things. It has a USB cable coming out of it that you attach to the computer and the device has 6 or 8 USB inputs. So you get an 8:1 ratio of devices versus ports.

There's plenty of software that doesn't use a dongle ... go use it! That's what I personally do.
btw, I'm laptop based, and you tend to find that software developers who recognise the importance of laptops in contemporary music making (i.e. the last 2 years) have implemented different forms of copy-protection. If software uses a donlge, I would question whether the software is likely to be suitable for laptop use in other ways...
