i left because i tried renoise and my mind was blown away
plus the customer service people ( some
of them wasnt very nice )
and that is really imporatnt to me
i feel like the company has moved away from the people
and version 11 was a kick in the teeth
for the faithful , and think its more a ploy/plan for them to BECOME an instrument rather than a DAW , theres so many good instruments out there i dont need it . bye pro.. er reason studios

I entered Reason because of the new Rack feature.

I left once and for all because of the Rack VST as well (all the good stuff), so in some ways I never left at all! But there were some "problems" with the actual DAW that led me switch before V11 came along:
1) Arranger navigation was difficult
2) No native video support (I do soundtrack work to video sometimes)
3) Not suited to audio editing (i.e. podcasts and spoken word)
4) MIDI editing was fairly limited
And a bunch more, but so many of them are just personal preference really. The Rack renders all of these points moot for me anyway. That said, though I feel like I may be in the minority here, I actually really miss the way automation works in Reason (clip based)
. No other DAW does it QUITE the same way (Reaper comes close with automation items... FL Studio as well, but it doesn't feel the same).

I've been a reason user since reason 4 and upgraded through the years and 10 being the last and final time i've used it. i am a ableton user now and don't regret the move. Propellerhead or reason studios is very outdated and has paid little attention to the people who have given a lot of money to that company only to be slapped in the face but this new vst version. poor GUI, outdated sequencer, outdated samples and awful workflow is why i left with countless other reasons. those being my main.

I posted this on ReasonTalk. The topic was "Would you upgrade from Reason 11". I think it summarizes my thoughts pretty well.
I've used Reason since version 1.0 and ReBirth before that. I've held licenses for Cubase, and Studio One for several years as well.
I've upgraded from version 4 onwards religiously, but i'm tired of waiting from VST midi out, offline rendering and workflow improvements. I'm tired of RS seeing itself as the "Apple" of the audio software world yet catering to hipsters and refusing to be called a DAW. I'm tired of the clunky mixer, rack, and seq windows. I'm tired of not being able to route midi to multiple channels. I'm tired of trying to work with external hardware in Reason. I'm tired of the super weird zooming and scrolling that goes on in the seq. I'm tired of the super tiny GUI ...etc. Yes, they are a good company with great ideas sometimes, but they have let everyone else slowly eat their lunch since 2003.
Reason is in a rough spot as it started out as something entirely different. Ableton Live is somewhat similar, yet it has been able to reinvent itself with the passing of time. Reason is stuck in this weird clunky space, not embracing what truly makes it special (rack paradigm, skeuomorphism), with an odd mix of a modern and legacy features. In some ways, it truly feels like a program out of time. The newer features eschew some of this. For example, players could be considered midi processors, but you can't find a single midi (or any) cable connected to the back of them. They are literally devices that sit in the rack and do god knows what if you aren't familiar with the program. They have to sit in a certain spot in the rack that never makes sense unless you think it out logically. All of this is at odds with what Reason was originally designed to do. Take a look at the newer devices. The older ones look far more similar to something you might find in a real hardware rack than the newer ones. It sometimes feels like RS doesn't who thy are marketing towards.
I work in software design. I realize you have to prioritize features and milestones, but propellerhead had an early lead in this market. They are a larger company (in terms of market share) that still for whatever reason (pun intended) thinks of itself as a small player in this game and often acts like a startup. The Reason as a rack concept was a good move, but where does that leave Reason itself. It is just so far behind, I can't for the life of myself ever see the standalone version catching up to the likes of Studio One, Live, Logic, Cubase, or even FL Studio. Unless the company decides to re-write the entire program and re-imagine it as something else. Furthermore, now Reason mostly exists as a VST. How exactly would they have the time to dedicate toward writing a new program vs maintaining legacy code?
I think ultimately, RS might just become a plugin company...and perhaps that is their place in the world now. I don't know. I hope i'm wrong of course. I still enjoy using Reason for what it is, but there are many more players in the game now. I think at this point I want Reason to be something it is never going to be and it might be time to move on without it. Even hipster, indy kids grow old.

On May 5th 2020, Reason Studios have a new update coming out with AAX support for the Reason Rack Plug-In. They have said they're working on an improved GUI for 4k monitors. Hopefully that will be included in the new release. Let's also hope (seeing as it's a graphics enhancement) that scalability will also be included in the GUI update when it arrives.

I tried multiple times to get into Reason, but couldn't handle the horribly small and dated interface. At least they should make it Retina/4K/HiDPI compatible, without changing the theme or making it flat and minimalistic.

I have ZERO excitement. If it comes, then I’ll be glad for it and spend money on it, but I stopped hoping and switched to ignoring updates several years ago due to disappointment.Eclectrophonic wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 6:59 pmOn May 5th 2020, Reason Studios have a new update coming out with AAX support for the Reason Rack Plug-In. Small, yes. Dated? Only by way of the tiny bitmap sizes. Otherwise, I like the design as it is.Yorrrrrr wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 7:09 pm I tried multiple times to get into Reason, but couldn't handle the horribly small and dated interface.
EDIT: as a person who grew up with 4 to 16-color CGA graphics, I find today’s flat minimalism bullshit to be the really dated look. And people call it “modern” and “clean”. Bah.
EDIT 2: ... especially with the revived obsession with cyan...

I can't understand why they drag their feet. Is it a Swedish thing or are they scared of making the daw too complex and just want to keep it simple? It has a very fast learning curve and ease of use aspect to it.

It won't. Actually there will be nothing else in 11.3 than AAX plugin and some minor bugfixes. Stefan (their social media guy) confirmed that on ReasonTalkEclectrophonic wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 6:59 pmOn May 5th 2020, Reason Studios have a new update coming out with AAX support for the Reason Rack Plug-In. Oh right but they are working on a GUI update so we'll be waiting till at least July then for that I'd say and then the daw isn't addressed feature-wise.antic604 wrote: Wed Apr 15, 2020 7:39 pmIt won't. Seems like Reason Studios is focusing more on the elements to make Reason a good VST plug-in for other DAWs. Maybe I’m wrong - but that how it seems at the moment.

Reason licensing system is a BS. Why do I need to wait 5 minutes while it is updating its license before using it as a standalone or as a plugin? I don't know any other software that requires so much time to check and update its license. I just opened it again after a week or so of not using it and it started updating licenses again.
