tom waits is a genius. the best thing to do is to buy all of his stuff. (especially, imho, everything from the 80's on.)

I wasn't really that familiar with TW until a buddy of mine told me that if I didn't go out and buy Bone Machine that I was "f**king up". So I went out and bought it.

It wasn't until late that night that I had a chance to listen to it though. I put on the headphones and when it got to the end I played it again, this time hitting the repeat function. Eventually I fell asleep, probably around the 4th time through, so all night long Bone Machine was playing. Needless to say, I had some pretty disturbing dreams that night!

Following that, I went out and bought every previous album. I'd have to say my favorite of all time is Rain Dogs, but it's hard to wrong with any of his stuff.

Except Nighthawks at the Diner...

Why did people recommend this over Closing Time? :D Based on recommendations, I went to the local music shop. They had several inexpensive options to choose from, and I went with Nighthawks.

Er...

Too much rambling and "I gotta story"... cliched jazz comping... and general un-listenability.

The thing is, the distinct personality, talent, and even 'soul' of Tom Waits is in there, but there's far too much muck to sift through in order to get at it.

Philly.
He just released a new one. Haven't heard it, but I can't wait. The last one I picked up was Mule Variations, which hasn't really grown on me yet.
