I got to see him solo in Ann Arbor 20 or so years ago--I was in the front row, right next to him, watching his hands as he played. It was a memorable performance. RIP.

I had a similar experience (albeit with one of his larger ensembles) at the Village Gate in the late 70s. He truly was one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th century.
