Im lookin to get some true lofi grunge into my set up, and Im thinking of picking up a couple of cheap and choicy hardware units. For starters, I think an old reel tape machine would be nice, something to run breaks through. Im also looking for some crunchy old sampler, but not really sure what to go for. Could anyone recommend something? Im not particularly after classic (and pricy :D ) stuff, just something old and raunchy... and cheap!

Hehe, for a sampler, if you see a cheetah sx-16, buy it if you want real nastiness..it samples right down to 6khz, and if you turn the anti-aliasing filter off, it's very nasty. :hihi:

Sweet. Whats the crack with the SP12? Is that worth its salt? How about the Mirage?

Even cheaper than a Cheetah, try and score a Yamaha SU10. Not only can it brutalise samples and loops famously with some crabgrass filters, but also allows you to run realtime audio through it as well and mangle it with filters via the ribbon control or scratch it like a record. It's so BAD, it's good! :hihi: And at 20L or $40US 2nd hand, how can you go wrong?

Want to go REALLY wrong - Casio. SK-1, SK-5, RZ-1, etc. There's something about a Casio sound that screams 'Godfather of Lo-Fi!'

What can make a Casio sound worse you might ask? Put it through Radio Shacks Tandy/Realistic line of 'proffesional DJ amps and effects'. The creme de la creme du crap. :hihi: Ratshack Reverb that advertises here intrigues me. Those that recall the real Realistic boxes say it's 'not quite - but pretty darn close!' and I think the softwares like $15 or so?

Just my 2 cents for you on the subject of Lo fi.
Any cheaper, it'd just be shit.
