What a great find!

Oh wait, the birdsong thing was for real?
I thought that was just a bit of April 1st humor.

I was hoping it wasn't just an April Fool's joke  Even if it was a joke, I would still do it for the joy of it. It's a fun exercise too, and this will help me guide my songwriting.

As with all One Synth Challenges, samples are not allowed. Also, if your synth processes wavetables, you cannot load e.g. a birdsong in as a wavetable and reproduce the sound that way (still using a sample in a sense).

Bird sounds for the track MUST be synthesised in the same synth that all the other sounds are made from, including all percussion (kicks, snares, cymbals, shakers etc!).

The name in the comp says it all "One Synth Challenge" :-)

I want to ask. Can I use a free formant filter?

You can use it only if it is part of your chosen synth's on-board effects.

If it is an external effect, irrespective of free or commercial, it's not allowed.

There are a ton of bird sounds you can make without a formant filter. Check out the video!

The basic rules about external fx (ie those not on the synth) is that you should not use modulating fx, that is, those which affect the overall sound. So chorus and phasing EXTERNAL to the synth are NOT allowed. The interpretation of the rules though is really that the applied fx should not alter the sound to be unrecognisable direct from the synth. So, a little "mild" saturation/distortion might be OK, so long as the underlying sound of the synth is not overly compromised.

probably doesn't help much …

So, does the first 9 seconds of this sound like it has birds? To me it does and it works perfect.

Does anyone else hear a flock of birds at the beginning of this? To me it again sounds perfect, far better than an actual flock of birds.

I think though I have strong tendency to imagine sounds as being made by live creatures where others don't hear it.
My point being I could make what to me are beautiful otherworldly "birdlike" noises and others are just going to think, "that doesn't have any bird noises in it, he didn't follow the rules."

Yeah, I found a lot of the bird calls actually sound a lot like synth patches. For example, I find some of N.I.'s Monark patches sound a lot like the recordings from the Bird Sound website that Frostline posted. I've heard a couple of bird calls, just in my back yard, sound artificial and synth-like.
