This is not an entry.

Its a song I did a couple years ago. It's all Absynth, except for one short vocal track my husband persuaded me to include to add a personal touch.

Felt like sharing.

Absynth is definitely my favourite synth. I used mostly presets for this composition, but for the competition I hope to design my own sounds and dive deeper into Absynth.

Roundabout Black Friday, I used a buildup of Amazon credit to get Komplete Ultimate, and an unanticipated $150 bounty from my employer to get Zebra2 on sale, and now, at last with the chance to figure out either Zebra2 or Massive X, I'm...I'm undecided. I've spent two hours or so noodling aimlessly on each.

If I were to enter this with one synth I'd want to go multitracking with a hw synth. The Model D from Uli. Building it track by track. Voice by voice. That'd be fun.

For the OSC I would usually take two weeks noodling aimlessly :wink:

IMO take Zebra2, it'll probably scale better (more instances ...no pun).

That sounds about right. I'm really enjoying Massive X, and the CPU load is drastically reduced from what it was at first, but it still can't touch Zebra's lightness.

... just for inspiration ... i give SynthmasterOne a try ... only waveforms, no wavetables:

Cool bird sounds. Well sculpted. I'll be lucky if I can pull off a bird cacophony, let alone an accurate birdsong sound. Any hints?

Thank you posting that. I had tried synthmaster 2.9 but moved on. Guess I should try harder.

this is how i made a synthesized bird with SynthmasterOne:

Keytrack amount on OSCs: 0
2 Filters serial

SubOSC -> Ringmodulation OSC 1 -> Filter 1 -> Filter 2 -> AmpEnvelope

OSC 1: Waveform: Sine
Sub OSC: Waveform: Triangle

Filter 1: Bandstop, Cutoff 78Hz, Resonance: 0
Filter 2: Lowpass 24, Cutoff 262Hz, Resonance +21

Lfo 1 -> Filter 1: Sine, Unipolar, Attack time 20 msec., Phase 75°
Lfo 1 -> OSC 1 Pitch (-)
Lfo 2 -> Filter 2: Saw down, Unipolar, Attack time 0 msec., Phase 0°

Modulation Envelope 1-> OSC 1 Pitch (+)
Modulation Envelope 1 -> Filter 1 Cutoff: Attack 18 msec., Decay 0.9 sec., Sustain 0.4, Release 0,16 sec
Modulation Envelope 2 -> Filter 2 Cutoff: Attack 12 mse., Decay 0 sec., Sustain 0,75, Release 9 msec.
Amp Envelope: Attack 0,2 sec, Decay 0.95 sec, Sustain 0, Release 15 msec

…. maybe it helps to get more sunny spring atmosphere in your track ….

I was thinking of using Hive2 but I notice it has wavetable synthesis. Is it ok to use of I just avoid any patches using wavetable?

Post

I'm interested in submitting using Serum, but have a few questions:

-Can I use wavetables as long as they aren't sample based?
-Can I use commercial patches as a basis for my own patches?
-Can I submit a binaural (headphones required) track rather than a stereo mix?

Tx!

Hey badblocks. As far as I'm aware wavetable synths are allowed and your correct in that you can't use samples (I asked the same about Massive X). I'm not sue about commercial patches. I think Factory patches are ok.

I have another question of my own please before I get too far into it and then have to start swapping things out. 'Commercial FX are allowed'. I know that this normally isn't the case, so I just wanted to be certain with this. I take it that this means I can use any paid for reverb, delay and dynamics plugin this month?

Post

@wltchris101: I'm not a mod, but I'm practically 100% certain that any commercial effect can be used within the same set of additional rules that we always have - i.e. no chorus, distortion, etc.

I haven't seen any specific rules on wavetables, but I think the general rule on regular OSCs (individual opinions aside) has been that anything that comes within the default setup of the synth is fair game, wavetables included.

I thought about this during the last "Any Synth" challenge: What about Korg's Wavestation plugin, almost exclusively defined by its endless cycles of waveforms? Felt wrong to me at the time. But it's still a synth like any other synth - and I'd have no issue with it at all if anyone else should decide to use it this time around.

The semi-realistic alto sax on that track wouldn't be quite as impressive as, say, on a Qyooo track, of course ;-)

And I presume that commercial patches are fine as long as there are no imported multi-cycle waveforms in play - certainly this round, where there are no limitations on commercial products.

Cheers schiing. The fx inside Massive X are pretty good, but I wanna try some delay manipulation which will just be a lot better done outside of the synth. And if I'm able to use the external paid for plugins that I normally use it just makes things a little easier.
