absolutely, and I hope it doesn't sound trite, but when I heard, I did wonder "so what's going to happen to music now?"whyterabbyt wrote:f**k.
What an absolute loss to music; not just British music, all and any music that isnt just mass-media pap. A truly great man, a f**king HERO, in fact. He probably did more to broaden the minds and tastes of 3 generations of listeners than any 20 other DJ's put together.

in the states
or at least in my house he's only known by the Peel Sessions
I've given many a CD set for Xmas presents
'Wire'
'The Only Ones'
my fav 'Gang of Four'
etc.
is it John Peel fooling chatting up the Beatles on that 'Live at the BBC' CD set. He's a very funny guy, does a spot on James Mason impersonation at one point.
anyway real shame when these pioneers pass who let you know what radio could be

The greatest supporter of underground music in the mainstream media. Irreplaceable.

Around '86/87 they started releasing these albums with a Peel session label on them here in Canada. We couldn't get the BBC then, so all I could think was "what's a Peel session? Is that like the Old Grey Whistle Test or something?" But the discs had lots of the things we were listening to at the time: New Order, Smiths, Birthday Party, Joy Division, Wedding Present.
I can't think of any other broadcaster that was famous in places where they'd never actually heard his show, just because he had the presence of mind to love new music. Truly a loss to music fans.

HI
I remember in the mid seventies listerning to his program for the odd Reggae tune - at that point there was practically no reggae being played on the air, I imagine others have similar reasons - for the other genres he played - that no one else did.
Flipper.

I doubt there'd be enough paper in the world.nuffink wrote:The BBC should put up a list of the bands first broadcast on his show.
What an epitaph that'd be.
