Thank you Mr.Peel, opened my eyes to a lot of good music and changed my ideas about what makes music good.

I can't stop crying!

Peely introduced me to every genre I now love. He also had the most comforting voice ever.

I'll see you there mate!

This is really sad news.

Peely you were an inspiration for so many.

:( Just heard "Teenage Kicks" on the radio again ....

Terrible news.

I'd like to see this become the longest tribute thread ever in honour of a true musical/radio pioneer, and a genuine unaffected nice guy.

Loadsa memories of John's humour, but one that sticks in my mind, he was presenting on Top Of The Pops, George and Aretha song finished, and his line? - "George Michael there, he can make any old rubbish sound good - and he just did".

:) :) :)

..And I dearly hope they do play teenage Kicks at his funeral.

The more I think about this the worse I feel

Andy Parfitt said "John's influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades and his contribution to modern music and music culture is immeasurable. He will be hugely missed". Of how many other people in his profession can or will that be said?

Er, it did occur to me that it might be "nice" if as many KvR'ers as possible produced something as a tribute, and to celebrate a common love for music in all its diverse forms. After all, directly or indirectly, I think we all owe him.

Yes!

Hats off to whoever was behind the deliciously sly appointment of John as a TotP presenter. I used to watch it just to relish the sardonic wit in between all the dross.

It was the way, during the most appaling music of the seventies he would say...

"...John Bloggs has written asking for anything by Genesis. Sorry John, not on the show tonight. Here's The Fall..."

It seems funny to think he won't be there anymore.

Its yet another "you'll always remember where you were when you heard it" moment for me. . .

My fondest memories of him were me as a teenager in the 1980's, sitting patiently through his late night show evey night, with my tape recorder poised, ready to catch the next banging Hip Hop track fresh from the States.

But first I'd be forced to sit through some truly eclectic stuff form the likes Surfing Nun's From Outer Space, Ivor Cutler (an old geriatric Scottish poet) and then probably some banging death metal from Germany follwed but some guy on a banjo.

The guy definitely introduced me to stuff I'd have never otherwise heard of. And looking back, I owe him one for that.

RIP fella. . . I even forgive you for supporting Liverpool FC!

Just heard these sad news and I'm deeply shocked...

Without John Peel music for me wouldn't be the same as it is today, he had the biggest influence over decades!

When I got interested in punk and new wave in 1979/80 I heard that there was a show at BBC radio that featured all the newest and interesting bands, it was called "John Peel's Music". Here in Germany it was broadcasted at BFBS: first transmission Sunday night, 1:00-3:00!!
When I listened to the first show of him I was so impressed that I didn't miss his "John Peel's Music" for several years. Only about 3 hours sleep every Sunday night (I was younger then). The first few shows I had some difficulties to understand what he was saying because he was speaking very fast but he teached me even in understanding the English language a lot better.
I pinned down all the great new songs and bands he was playing and tried to get hold of some of these records in a small record store in Cologne that was specialized in importing this stuff from England. So I got into Joy Division, Chameleons, Nightingales, The Sound and so on and so on...

As you can imagine, he was a hero of mine and I will never forget him!
Now he will rock the angels in heaven... definitely!
