OK, So the track I posted earlier got a relatively favourable response.
Here's a track I made back in 1997 using Yamaha CS1x, Roland MC-303 (as sound module only), Cubase VST 3.1 on a PowerMac 8500 and a Zoom 901 guitar effects processor.
I quite like it, but never released it, and was thinking of redoing it using current technology (i.e. VST plugins, no hardware! hehe)

Not so far, no. 
I took a glance before, but I'm not much of a judge of trance stuff and TBH, I didn't feel so much like checking out an old track - there's something about someone posting something new and fresh that's more appealing.
So I downloaded it and am listening now, but like I said before, I'm not much of a judge of trance stuff. All I can really say is that while I like its energy and some of its sounds, I think it's lacking oomph; not enough boom in its bottom end. It's like seeing a supermodel in person.

Well, the track definitely shows it's age. There's some good traditional goa stuff going on in the middle section, but I didn't really like the cheesy parts with bells, they almost sound like they're from a children's song or something and don't quite fit it. A rerecord with modern equipment could be cool but I would definitely consider scratching the bell sections altogether and coming up with something new. But it's only my opinion, so don't count on it.. 
Then again, maybe use the time and energy on something new?

I listened to this earlier in the day, so I don't have any specific recommendations...I do like it alot though. I think in many ways, it sounds better than software, especially those tracks where every sound is just too perfect. This sounds more organic and mostly it fits together well. I agree that the bell sound needs to be improveed, though.

heheh...not that bad actually...you don't get this kind of tracks from some trance kid who just got some plugins and a sequencer...the mix is very odd tho' so it would need A LOT of polishing...sounds like it was recorded inside a tin can!?
anyways...I would very much like to hear wot you make in the future...hear some skill in your track (it's not produced very well, but modern tech should give you the upper hand)
the psy-lead is def cool...your best bet would be on that imo!

It's true the production is terrible. Especially at that time, I had to record through my Samson mixer *shudder* and then the Mac couldn't handle many plugins so I had to 'freeze' each effect layer by layer.
The 'tin can' sound is actually the Zoom guitar effects processor, which is nastyfying the sawtooth lead. I actually like that sound, it's a shame I've been unable to find a plugin as versatile as the zoom processor, much less an array of plugins that can even emulate it.
Nobody likes the bell sound. I would replace that with something more organic and less piercing. The reason I'm in two minds over whether to redo it is that the lead melody, with it's minor key and arab scales might sound somewhat dated. As a couple of you stated 'goa-like' that's exactly what I was looking for at the time, but nobody plays such cliche'd Goa anymore.
Oh well... lessons learned, time to move on and make some new stuff I suppose

This was the first track I've put together for 7 years! I made it with a different philosophy. I was going for something not too complex or energetic to pull the crowd along slowly into a nice trance feel. This track isn't really finished, it needs some more subtle layering and meatiness but I quite like it as it is anyway, so I wanted to get the KVR'ers opinion. Have a listen if you get time.
