Ah, I got Chromaphone 1 & 2 in my possession. I really like making (chromatic) percussion sounds on them. I was wondering if there are more of such plug-in's in order to expand to sound design possibilities in that area.

I'm looking forward to seeing how plasmonic will stack up against other physical modeling synths.

Kaivo - tricky to get a handle on it, but once you do it is quite logical and clear to program. They have sales and it can be picked up secondhand https://madronalabs.com/products/kaivo

Zebra can do excellent modeling of percussion. Not specifically aimed at that so it takes a bit more work, but the tools are there to make a wide variety of sounds in high quality. Start with the Comb modules.

The one problem with Kaivo is CPU use. 4 note polyphony is about tops for me. Plus if you set it to 4 voices, it uses the full cpu regardless of whether you are playing notes.

yep it is a CPU beast - same for Falcon - but i find Kaivo gives very different results to Chromaphone so both are worthwhile

It's not nearly that bad on my 6-year-old 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac, fwiw. Actually, until reading this I never ever thought of it as a CPU hog; Falcon, either. Some rare Reaktor UL stuff, yeah, and some unison-heavy MSoundFactory patches definitely…

Many interesting alternatives and additions to Chromaphone tom here:)
As a long-time fan of and collector of PM synths, I'd say that Chromaphone, along with all the AAS synths, is limited as a sound design tool compared to many others listed here, as it's much more aggressively aimed at emulation than at weird experiments. IMO, that's the strength AND the weakness of the AAS tools, depending on what you're after.

As I'm after uniqueness at least if not downright weirdness (love that, too:), I'd put Kaivo especially, plus Prism, Falcon, Reaktor, MSF, probably the VCV Mutable clones, and Sculpture (requires Logic!) at the top of my own list. I've not extensively (or even at all) checked out any others listed here.

If you'd like audio demos for any of those in my above, I can oblige, though not perhaps very swiftly as I'm not operating in high gear ATM, but it's definitely something I'd enjoy doing:)

If your budget/GAS can handle it, there's also Pianoteq Pro, which offers several pitched percussion models, as well as a ton of controls for all their models (per-string/pitch adjustments!). But only for the top of the line version, Pro. The others sound the same but don't offer the same level of tweakability. But there's also a very useable free demo of the middle-teir version, which can give you quite a good taste.

I also love Chromaphone 2.
Sculpture is another favorite here but of course its bound to Logic.
Otherwise Reaktor Prism is my next choice. This thing sounds really good, not expensive really and also usable as FX version.

Correct me if I am wrong but at one time I thought I read in a Z3 thread that Urs was considering physical modeling in Z3. I know its not out yet and we all will have to wait and see what makes the final cut but wasn't that a discussion at one point?

it has some physical modelling already- the comb filter OSCs are basically Karplus-Strong algos.

Edited: Deleted since it was a sampled percussion and nothing modeled.

Yes... Z3 is supposed to get some additional modeling tools... It is still too far away to depend on that.
