I'm completely new here, obviously, yet I'm new to music. What I've been using these past weeks is just GarageBand, but I feel like I can do better if I had the right tools/equipment/software. I don't have a specific goal in mind right now, but maybe you guys have some suggestions which threads I should read, that I could learn more about not just making music, but how to decide which synth do buy or basically any tips for a complete beginner.

I would say stick with GarageBand for now and learn one thing. I think some people try to add too much too quickly and get stuck without knowing where to go with it.

If you learn some basics first, it will help you decide where you want to go next.

Can you play keyboards? That's a huge benefit to being able to do anything with music software.

Honestly you can get pretty far with GarageBand. I feel like as you come up against limitations you'll get a better idea of what it is you're missing and what to look for. Until then save your money and do what you can with what you've got!

edit:
Oh yeah, and like @Forgotten said, learn to play keys. You don't have to be a virtuoso, a little bit goes a long way.

If you've got GarageBand and the disk space, make sure to go in and download all of the various loop/instrument packs. It will provide you with a ton of things to play around with, and loops that you can use to start building songs or use as complements/backing tracks to your instruments.

If you do like GarageBand and decide at some point to spend some money, the direct upgrade is Logic Pro X, it costs about $200 but it also includes a suite of instruments, effects and soundware comprehensive enough that you can make a wide range of music using just the built-in plugins. That being said, you can make a fair bit using just what comes with GarageBand, for "free," so it's a good starting point (I started out back when there was a thing called "Logic Express," but if I'd started out with GarageBand it would have taken a while for me to outgrow it). Also, don't be afraid to poke around in the various menus and settings, certain parts of it are deeper than they may appear at first glance...

My daughter has this "novation launchkey 61", I've played with it a few times, seems interesting. I'll try learning a bit more, I will see if anything gets me interested. Thank you :tu: :phones:

Smart boy.

People have used their own name in the past but I definitely wouldn't. I certainly don't feel comfortable having my personal details out in the open.

Welcome.
