Trancit wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2020 8:35 amOf course... nevertheless there is the question how often they are used in reality... I´ve seen countless videos where the tutors used a LFO after a LFO after a LFO... etc...
And that's a good reason to discredit the functionality? Because some (most?) people don't need it or don't know how to use it? That's a pretty selfish view point, isn't it? You don't see me go to Cubase's forum urging them to stop working on VariAudio or their comping features, because I - personally - have no use for them! Neither do I go there saying those features aren't needed, because people should just learn to sing in tune and play their instrument right the 1st time...

Can you please stop derailing this topic?
That´s my opinion and what happens to me... I think this 1. qualifies my postings for this topic... and 2. while we are at "READ.IT.SLOWLY" try your own advice at the thread title... do you understand the word "BASIC"???
Do you think your mentioned additional methods like Math, audio and midi sidechain, note counter fall into the category "BASIC"???

I think everybody knows what this shall mean...
Enlighten me what it is other than an oxymoron, please?
Very easy... a static modulation is a modulation which does always the same without any change over time... cycle after cycle after cycle...

Ok, if worded like that it makes (some) sense.

You can stack up 5 free-running, not beat-synced LFOs where the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4rd modulate 5th LFO's rate, depth, slew and shape. Those are still 5 basic LFOs, but the result is not basic anymore.

Also, I mentioned those "special" modulators in reply to YOUR assertion that automation is nothing more than "frozen" modulation. Read my initial reply - before you derailed the topic going into DAW vs. DAW - where I addressed OP's questions directly. I did read it :)

Yes, of course... but it´s 1. perhaps more work intense than automation drawing with predefined shapes and if you want to happen at certain sections only you have to use automation anyway... :tu:

Sure, but this is becoming automation vs. modulation debate, which we will never settle as it is highly personal preference, depending on music style, favourite workflow and possibilites of the tools you use.

I mean with static modulation that it is always the same. sure you can use envelope followers. but this is always same as when a guitar player for example play all notes with a half bend up or all with large vibrato. or use in synth always modulation wheel at same level(mid or full). i hear none that do that.

here is a video whats possible in s1. what i mean to edit the sine curves and more later is the transform tool. this is really powerful maybe you have not notice it because other DAW offer this not.

No, I'm perfectly aware of it. It's just not a replacement for proper modulation system - they serve different purposes like I already said above :)

Some simple examples of how modulators work & what you can do with them in Bitwig:

This might sound obvious, but, why not just use Bitwig, or other DAW's which have better modulation capabilities than Studio One? Really, nothin' worse than a workflow which doesn't suit you. I don't miss those modulation options one bit in Studio One, TBH.

Because, as already discussed, some people prefer to work in multiple DAWs to leverage the best tools for each functionality they use, while others would rather stick to just one that does the best things they do the most of & compromising on the rest.

You don't miss modulation in S1. I and the OP apparently do miss it. How are you planning to resolve who's right? ;) :D

Nobody's right. :) Studio One has been developed according to the visions its developers had for the software. And those don't include comprehensive modulation options like in Bitwig. As simple as that.

dellboy the dunce: "whats modulation for ? "

Bitwig expert" "its cool, it means you can modulate stuff"

dellboy the dunce "explain ?"

Bitwig expert: "just buy Bitwig and find out for yourself and become part of the cool modulation scene"

dellboy the dunce: ok, I got Bitwig now, how do I modulate ?"

Bitwig expert : "sucker".

You could probably say the same about their plans not including pattern sequencer, Atom controller or XT versions of Impact or SampleOne when they were at v3 and yet, here we are. Beat makers and electronic music producers, especially hobbyists, is where the money is for DAW industry, because pros don't upgrade immediately nor use several DAWs.

As I said elsewhere, Presonus seems to be trying to straddle the gap between 'creative' and 'traditional' DAWs and distinguish themselves from Cubase (like Bitwig does vs. Live). I won't be surprised if we're gonna see some form of modulation and/or clip launching in v5 or 5.5 :)
