From what I can tell, Cakewalk and Reaper don't come bundled with instruments. Are there other DAWs like that? I have loads of VST instruments, maybe more than I need, and would rather just use them, since they speak to me. Right now I use Orion, but it's not supported anymore, so when something is released in only VST3, I'm screwed.

why? you already have everything you need to make musicrandomelement2` wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2020 6:10 pm From what I can tell, Cakewalk and Reaper don't come bundled with instruments. vst xyz released in the future wont make your music better
only upgrade when you need to.
ie, when your machine dies, and the os has moved on so far orion wont load.
then worry.
for now, make music and worry not

also, when you do need to move to something new there are other more importamt criteria, workflow being the most important imo.
if youre used to working with orions midi moving to eg samplitude is a pain (i know, i did it) but i use more outboard and record audio, so wasnt a show stopper.
but the times ive needed to edit some midi, its such a ballache i tend to open orion
its just a case of getting used to it i guess, but id consider that, before, as chk071 points out, instruments ypu can ignore.

Well, Physical Audio just released a video of something they're working on, a 'mysterious string instrument' that sounds amazing. VST3 only. And I'm assuming that will be the case when they release a Windows version of Derailer. I love really good physical modelling. I'm assuming as time goes on, there will be other interesting software that's VST3 only.vurt wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2020 6:46 pm why? you already have everything you need to make music

but i would still suggest considering workflow over the included synths and fx.

This is more simpler (and cheaper) solution than changing your working DAW for another, just because of vst3 support and few bits of vst3 only software.randomelement2` wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2020 9:29 pm I'm assuming as time goes on, there will be other interesting software that's VST3 only.

Another much expensive solution, again if Orion is really doing the job for you
https://www.vsl.co.at/en/Vienna_Ensemble_Pro
but that's little overkill for your needs right now, maybe in future if Orion stops working in newest OS and some other stuff start requiring just newest, than you can get another machine to run those plugins via VEPro and keep using Orion on current one.

maybe over time hes realised he doesnt use them, so considers it bloat?chk071 wrote: Sat Apr 18, 2020 1:52 pm What actually confuses me a bit about this request is that Orion comes with lots of instruments...

As time goes on, I'm more interested in things like physical modelling and granular, neither of which Orion has. I just recently started using it again after not doing anything musically for quite a long time. I'm getting some use from their synths, but I'm heading in a different direction. If someone would buy the source code from Rich (who said he's open to it) and update it so that it would play VST3, I'd stick with that. I like the workflow of Orion.chk071 wrote: Sat Apr 18, 2020 1:52 pm What actually confuses me a bit about this request is that Orion comes with lots of instruments...

if i was you, in this case, as you know now at some point you will be upgrading, use somr of this extra downtime we all have, to demo as many of them as you can.randomelement2` wrote: Sat Apr 18, 2020 2:39 pm
, I'd stick with that. I like the workflow of Orion.
some will be so far away ftom orion, you wont like them at all, others may be closer, depending on what it is you like about orion.
nome i know of are the same, it was a very unique programme.
but ignore the instruments if you dont need them
