Just received this news from U & I:

"...ArtMatic CTX products Designer, Explorer, and Voyager are almost here! Final build testing has begun and we expect them to be available by May. Then Eric can turn his attention to rebuilding MetaSynth, then Xx, then V-Quartz to complete CTX line. After each MacOS product is complete, the Windows CTX version will begin development."

I know it is not for now, or even for this year. but it seems Eric finally saw the light. :D

Yay for that. I wanted MetaSynth so much way back when that i almost got a Mac to run it.
What is comparable to MetaSynth in windozia these days? Iris? Harmor? Alchemy v1?

Kaleidoscope. Its also a more more advanced in this area. They are not exact the same tools but share similar things. Meta synth does a few more things but where it counts for me Kaleidoscope is next level.
F.e. the tuning system in Kaleidoscope is the most advanced i saw yet.

Really? Have to check that. Until now, I never found anything that did what Metasynth does. The only software that approaches it is Photosounder, but it is very far from the power of Metasynth.

That said, I never crossed paths with Kaleidoscope. I know that the author started by creating third party material for Metasynth. Let's see.

Only 150 bucks as well, so quite a bit cheaper....personally I found to be Kaleidoscope more like an effects processor that a 'synth', but it does do both and I think it may be much more 'metasynth' like if you added the optional waveforms https://www.galbanum.com/products/archi ... eforms2010
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

They are a bit different. Metasynth use FFT while Kaleidoscope uses up to 512 resonators which can be tuned in any way (even via waveforms).
Metasynth does more things and is like a whole production environment since Kaleidoscope is more of a FX (but also synth if you like).
I´m more interested in the picture to sound thing.
Kaleidoscope has no draw options like Metasynth (but a lot to modulate/change imported pictures).
So maybe not the best comparison. While they can produce similar sounds i think Metasynth gives you a lot more options but its all mainly more unmusical for me.
I´m no expert for these tools but for me Kaleidoscope is something like a next generation Metasynth, at least some parts of it.
So short said for me Metasyth gives you a lot more while where they overlap Kaleidoscope is way better for me.

Iris 2 had some nice drawing tools and can be picked up very cheaply during sales. Such a pity they stopped developing Iris....so much potential (they could add some nice reverbs and fx now!)

Also maybe worth to play with free tools like Virtual ANS. Available for almost all platforms.
However, all of these niche tools share one thing. They seems to not evolve much anymore or not at all and in the meantime there are other tools doing things totally different but sounds almost the same with less cpu usage and in a much more controlled way.
I remember even about an app i had on my phone which could use real-time video to convert that into sound....but it mostly sounded terrible of course :D

development's pretty much abandoned, though, isnt it?

I thought that but they still seems to not forgot about it (at least what was said in the Kaleidoscope thread). I doubt we will se anything this year. Maybe it my most forward looking update i wait for but i think it is still far far away while there is a chance it might happen.
But then like i said i feel all these niche tools are more or less abandoned or i see nothing really innovative new there. I did not tried them all since its an expensive way.
I guess its all not very commercial at the end.
I already could imagine a hybrid like Kaleidoscope meets Metasynth on a tablet where i could draw with a pencil things in realtime, morph scenes and whatever.
But cpu are not ready and mankind also not :)

We may say so. I thought I would never see the day Eric cross the frontier. :)
