I'm really liking the J. For my needs the compressor offers much more punch than E & G — which I always felt were missing some snap when I compared them with Softube & Waves equivalents.

Yeah!
Yeah, while we MIGHT have that, the argument here is that PA isn’t IT.
The fact that PA’s 9000J, 4000G/E and Neve all have identical THD algorithm speaks volumes.
The argument is also that TMT is a caricature of how a real desk behaves and that a desk like TMT would likely need service...

Also if you’re old, your HF rolloff is probably worse than it was, and aliasing manifests mostly at higher frequencies (unless its absolutely terrible).
Its okay that you don’t care about aliasing. A lot of more renowned software vendors than PA do, and so do a lot of renowned engineers.
Aliasing accumulates and is probably one of the harshest things you’ll get from a digital processor.

Besides... it’s 2020, and majority of decent devs treat antialiasing as basic plugin hygene...
That's an interesting claim. It could be true. Have you ran their plugins side by side and compared??

What I personally thought was happening is in their studies of the equipment they would have been noticing the differences in tolerances between each component or strip. Because you have the measurements you can easily pick the outliers then just have the algorithm randomly choose a tolerance between them.

Sounds logical, it makes sense and if you did something like use the channel number as the "seed" number, you can be assured that it's the same every time you select a particular channel. But because the measurements are different from one analogue device to another their channel components and outliers would all be unique to that product.

In this sense using the same algorithm doesn't mean it sounds the same. In actual fact its quite the opposite. It's a guarantee that it would all sound different. Providing they've done something similar to this.
The outliers can nudge the stereo image by 1-2dB - certainly enough that you can hear it, even in the SPL IRON mastering compressor. (and also bx_masterdesk)
Unless they measured faulty equipment, TMT is over-pronounced. Even old behringer mixers don't have as much tolerance...

Also yes, I ran them side by side, 4 of them (including bx_2098). Focusrite_sc has a different THD, and it's also the only one that stays on when you turn off the EQ.
The EQ-THD correlation has absolutely no sense, and the fact that same weird behaviour exists in all 4 consoles, leads me to believe it's identical code reused - along with all its quirks.

But I have since discovered that the perceptively most used plugins are the ones with the largest marketing budget, not the best coding. PA doesn't strive for perfection, they strive to sell as much MEGA bundles as possible. That means en-masse. That's not pro-studios, that's not engineers who fall in love with a single plugin and use it for a decade. That's a horde of amateurs/prosumers who never heard a real SSL in their life and live on the preconception of what it supposedly sounds like, then take Michael Brauer's paid word for it that it's the exact shit from Electric Lady.
The reason i respect Serban Ghenea so much, who supposedly mixes everything itb - he doesn't endorse shit. he doesn't need to, because he's so good. :)

You can't live from 29$/plugin if you sell stuff to a smaller critical audience unfortunately, also, catering support to 500000 subscribers? I've waited a month to get a ticket resolved. I wouldn't want to run a day-to-day studio if i need to wait a f**king month for support reply. (That's why I sold all my PA shit)
Also, that's why u-he is 10x as expensive as PA. Less customers, better, personal support, and plugins complaints that are addressed in two working days.

I just bought Unisum for it's intro price of 149$. Before I buy, i write something to support to see how they respond.
Then I bought it. I could get 4 "mastering grade" plugins from PA for that price, except i'd wait 1 month for a support response and IMO they aren't as mastering grade as they claim to be in the first place.
Imo, sans a few outliers, best PA stuff is things coded by Raimund and André that left a couple of years ago... So some old UAD stuff (albeit a little dated), etc.
Most of newer plugins to me seems sloppily thrown together and rushed through the marketing so they can sell more MEGA BUNDLES, ADDED AT NO EXTRA COST.

Trancit wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2020 10:18 pm Please consider as well that Dan used a boost of 12 db in his example which is of course no real life scenario...
I doubt that any of you would ever stand a blindtest with "normal values" of perhaps 3db of boosting...

Second... try to do not an A/B ... if you just hear one version of a drumloop... stop the sequencer, do a break and then here the other one... do you here then difference then???
Or make an A/B test with a cramping EQ on one drumloop and a different drumloop for the not cramping EQ...
It´s easier to spot a difference between 2 same versions (just with different plugins) but that´s not how people listen to music...
Nobody would really sit there hearing a song i.e. equed with reaEQ and think: Wow... this EQ is really cramping a lot???

So I stand with that... there is a theoretical problem but absolutely nothing to care about...

i've used 10dB boosts before, especially on the high end of the spectrum, especially on C12VR which is a bit dark in nature... Very lean high-shelves. Isn't that what "air" is all about?

Not sure which PA #plugs are actually by André & Raimund, yet that 'Phils cascade' I would say that could be Raimunds work, looking at the more recent Fuse Audio Labs GUI's... Yet, PA does have some more Gems in the Bucket, like Unfiltered Audio's catalogue. Some also swear on the HG Black Box, or the VSM-3 and so on; the BX Subsynth is another recommended one... Maybe these are André & Raimunds work though, not sure. Just my 2 cents.

You can check the credits in the plug-ins interface to see this.

Phil's cascade is Raimund's work. :) So is HG BlackBox. So is VSM3!
His Fuse Audio VPRE-2C has a very similar vibe to Phil's cascade. I actually sold Phil's Cascade and bought VPRE-2C instead (on my anti-PA crusade). He has about 3 tube saturators and all are great. The new VCL-515 is a tube saturator on the side. He REALLY does great tubes...
Yeah, Unfiltered Audio, and Dmitry Schess.

I actually have that VPRE-2c, yet thought the new FAL was a VariMuComp. My bad that I forgot Thorn, as I also have that, as same as the UA stuff...

Ok, just read its a TubeLimiter... looks interesting for sure! :tu:

its varimu-ish but it's not similar to any other i tried.
And it has an "amp" mode which is just a saturator then :)

No, the hundreds of others bending over on their knees with their hands together, shouting "thanks Di*k" are.

Sorry, not seeing that in this thread, just some narcissism.
