If you can't wrap your head around Reaper, but you start exploring the customization and get it just right to suit your workflow and look, then firing up Reaper after that feels almost like cheating. You can't believe how good it is.
There are two kinds of people in the world. And you're not one of them.

I couldn't be bothered learning something else and most things I want to try are beyond my budget and probably not wotrh the effort required to learn them. But Reaper hangs a lot for me once I move outside audio only work - complex midi automation is not one of Reapers strengths - of course I understand I am the only one in history to have this problem.

I haven't left Reaper because I can't find my way back out of the maze.
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

Haha. :D

Stability & OSC. The OSC could be better. Very responsive developers when a stability issue appears, though.

And it's got llamas. Now that is an exclusive feature. Saves huge amounts of work.

in my opinion, with Automation Item Reaper is the best DAW for automation.

Great, how do you automate the automation item though as that is the sort of thing I want to do a lot? The current built in LFO is very crude , is there another method? For example can I setup an automation item then modulate the amplitude of that with a sine wave that varies in frequency?

And automation items can be combined simultaneously.
It's difficult to describe it.

It maybe a little bother if you have some knowledge about it.
But I recommend you to see these videos one by one without skipping.

that's great - thanks for posting those videos - looks like for what I want automation items are a huge improvement in Reaper to the old automation. Really appreciate your help.

Reaper simplicity and adaptability its key for me. It's very easy to use and it gives you totally control for edit MIDI but also it's incredible with audio files (I think reaper still needs a few things to catching up with Cubase for Presonus for example). But I think it would be there, and for Sound Design it's just the best DAW out there

I have kind of left Reaper but still go back to it at times and get amazed at how fast it can be. Creating a reversed reverb to sounds is literally a one button click operation.

I wish all DAW's had LUA scripting. :(

exactly and when you work with another DAW it feels as boring as a bullshit job.

I spent last year diving into Reaper. I like it, it's a great DAW, definitely has that ability to come up with a solution for most all problems thrown at it. Deep resources on how to get the most out of it, enough videos to never read the manual if you chose.

However this is the sort of evangelism that turns people off. In no way is Reaper intuitive, it's not more "fun" to operate, and the solutions are not always best of show solutions. It's as much work, in fact even more work IMO to get Reaper to feel comfortable using.
There are still even with customization huge UX areas that are big head shakers, selecting things the the arrangement timeline is just, awkward compared to other DAWs, the amount of wasted blank space in the 'track' plug in window, the fact it had nothing but bars for automation in the MIDI editor until recently etc. etc.

I like it, I'll still be using it from time to time, it's a default collaboration choice with it's unlimited trial period, and cheap non pro price, but it's not my main DAW. Too many things I do feel tacked on in Reaper, they work but not at the same level I get out of other DAWs.
