Thank you for the kind words and love both new tracks! What sustain pedal are you using? I have a continuous controller sustain pedal I use with Pianoteq but they are few and far between.

Hi Jeremy! Thanks...so glad to hear enjoyed the new ones! 😊 With my tour rig I use a standard Yamaha sustain pedal...not sure what model it is. It’s packed in the tour case with my Nord Electro and for obvious reasons it is not being used. I grabbed an “el cheapo” pedal from a local music store but it has been giving me stress lately so I just ordered a Boss FS-5U. It’s not a traditional sustain pedal, but I like the compactness of it. I was considering getting one with continuous control...like the Roland DP-10, but since I basically take the Linnstrument everywhere I go, I’m trying to keep the setup small.

Thanks! I use a fairly cheap one for gigging (the Casio PX5s damper does not respond to continuous controller messages anyway). I have the Roland for the studio to use with Pianoteq because it does respond - it is not very portable at all! I also have a Keith McMillan SoftStep which is very non-traditional but can be set up to do anything and is highly portable and virtually indestructible. I can set it up to control all four pedals in Pianoteq which is nice.

I have not tried anything with LinnStrument yet because I still play piano sounds on a regular keyboard. I appreciate your videos and Steve's (including his lesson video) to improve my two handed piano playing on LinnStrument.

Hi Fontaine,

Two new great videos-- thanks! I love seeing you play what I can't. :)

I appreciate how your videos feature LinnStrument, so it's easy to clearly see and hear exactly what you're playing without effects or too many other things in the mix to get in the way.

I've added both to the LinnStrument Owner Videos and Roger's Favorite Videos playlists.

For what it's worth, I have four Yamaha FC-5 pedals in my touring rig, doing everything from starting/stopping drum machines, to providing addition footswitches for my Helix, etc. In recent years, I've been using one of them as a sustain pedal for my LinnStrument... Touch wood, but I've never had a problem with them. In fact, I've had the same four pedals for over a decade now, and have yet to replace or repair any of them. Not bad, considering how cheap they are.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Cheers!

Sorry, redundant post... Deleted. :?

Actually, I might as well use this post to say that this jam was totally my speed. I've been quite obsessed with playing Rhodes/Wurli sounds with the LinnStrument since I got it; probably because I'm such a shoddy keyboardist, and the LinnStrument has really opened-up those instruments to me. Gotta love those timbres. Good playing, Mr. B. Props!

Cheers!

Regarding sustain pedals, unfortunately LinnStrument's single/dual foot switch input only accepts switches and will recognize a continuous pedal as a switch. I like the dual foot pedal that is described at the bottom of the LinnStrument Hooking It Up page, the StudioLogic VFP2/10B:

Really inspiring, Fontaine, as always.
And that pinky seems to have a life of its own! 😊

Thanks so much Roger! 🙏🏽 I really appreciate that! Yes, I try and make it clear that I’m actually playing the LinnStrument. A lot of people assume that I’m launching clips or samples via Ableton. I just want to underline the fact that it is an instrument that will allow you to go musically anywhere you want to go.

Thanks David! Those pinkies... I don’t know what to do with them! 😂😂 When I’m playing keyboards or guitar they have plenty to do. Since I’ve gone to the LinnStrument, they are searching for a job! Maybe I should wire them up with some disco lights or an action camera or something! 😂

Thanks John! Yes, I love playing Rhodes/Wurlies on the LinnStrument! I’m using Neo Soul Keys and it responds to finger vibrato in the coolest way. It’s kind of like a bigsby vibrato on a guitar...a subtle little shimmer. I don’t dig that effect on acoustic piano sounds so much, but on electric piano it’s sweet!

The FC-5 is a definite workhorse. The ones I’ve had in the past were very reliable. And like you said they are quite inexpensive. The reason I choose the Boss over the Yamaha is the fact that I can switch the polarity and also that it doesn’t have a fixed cable. The cable always seems to be the part of a sustain pedal that dies first. With the Boss, if something happens to the cable, I can just quickly switch it out with any quarter inch cable that I have on hand. And if for some reason that fails, I can fall back on the LinnStrument’s legato mode...which is a very cool feature that I like to use when I’m playing the LinnStrument in bed! 😂

Actually, I cut the stock cables short on all my FC-5 pedals, down to just about a foot or so, and replaced the ends with (female) Neutrik locking jacks; so I can use whatever length cables I need. This also puts less strain on the remaining cable, hanging off the back of the pedal itself. Between that and generally taking care of my gear, they've held up impressively. And I'm able to change how the pedal polarity is handled on each piece of gear I'm plugging them into, so I don't need that functionality on the pedal itself. Handy to have though, for sure.

I have Neo-Soul Keys on my iPad, and absolutely love the sounds. However, after years of dealing with random issues related to Apple's ever-changing iOS protocols, iConnectivity's software woes, and the inevitable bugs that every app update brings; the iPad has officially been banned from my live rig. Hell, recently I left the LinnStrument plugged into the iPad overnight... The iPad ran dead, and bricked my LinnStrument! Sufficed to say, unless I go the laptop route, unfortunately Neo-Soul Keys is not going onstage with me any more. :(

Cheers!

Heres a vid I made using the linn with the hydrasynth for the main melody.
