Be aware that a stereo minijack will not work properly on a mono channel. You will hear either nothing or just one side of the stereo. You would be better off with a stereo to mono lead.

Is there an adapter to convert stereo mini (3.5mm) jack male to go to mono instrument (1/4") jack male? Basically female stereo mini jack to male mono instrument jack adapter?

Post

I'm sure there will be ...

EDIT
Yeah. Took all of 5 mins on Google to find one

Yesterday I showed you a picture of the adapter you need. Insert one or two of the 1/4" TS plugs in the mixer as you seem fit.

There's just one combination of factors I can think of why you need to go to a single mono plug:

1) the tracks you play on the MP3 player are not or badly mono-compatible and have some of the essential instruments hard-panned. You can do something about that if you really want to.
2) and the mixer you're routing into has only one spare mono channel for your mp3 player

Bert, there are enough inputs to have both L and R into the mixer or PA but PAs don't have pan so it would still loose any stereo information. My worry about just plugging one of the Y adapter jacks in is it will only be half of the signal so won't it be half as load? Quieter than than combining the whole thing into one mono jack? I would be loosing half the signal right?

Post

Yes. That's why I suggested the adaptor above ^^ it converts a stereo minijack lead to a single mono 1/4 jack.

Post

Thanks. I did buy that adapter. I had a load of those but only stereo but now I will have a proper mono one. When it arrives. The Y adapter just causes complications. Two inputs causing the sound guy to set the volume on two channels. It's not worth the hassle because the stereo information is not necessary. Mono, one channel. Just keeps it simple that way! Thanks for the link. :-)

Hmmm, dunno...

So you're regularly plugging into Mister Mono PA. That should not be too much of a problem, and it's not your responsibility to have each and every adapter or say cable length.

Using just one of the L/R plugs would suffice IF the tracks you play don't have essential stuff hard-panned. That is something you can fix yourself imho in prepararion.

The PA in the practice room I use doesn't have pan. At the open mics I've played at the inputs go into a mixer to be fair but if it's going straight into a PA it is unlikely to have pan. My logic was sending one side of a stereo signal was a less good idea than turning it all into one mono signal. That was my logic anyway!

Post

I see. It might be worth investing in a small mixer to use when you practise. So you can set a proper gain structure, and also for some volume controls (and stereo) :). Going straight into a PA from a phone/ tablet is not ideal.

Post

There is volume control on the PA and on the MP3 player. What difference will it make if it goes into a mixer first?
