I was radicalised by early attitudes toward paying for downloads. I heard "why should I pay for something that doesn't exist" far too often, as though the music itself was worthless and the only substance was the artwork and medium it was printed on. I felt like it was a symptom of a larger problem - that sound is viewed as an inferior art and it somehow needs visual and/or tactile elements to be worth people's time and/or money. So many sound artists who've been going for years have become wildly popular in the age of Youtube (e.g. Cassetteboy) simply because people want a visual adjunct so they can zone out their eyes whether it serves the work or not (in Cassetteboy's case, I'd argue it weakens it.)
Attitudes have changed a lot now, but those early years were enough to leave me with no love whatsoever for the 'multimedia' aspect of music. Keep the packaging, keep the medium, I'll just take the music thanks.

First — other peoples' opinion isn't a very good reason for radicalising.cron wrote: Sun Apr 26, 2020 3:36 pm I was radicalised by early attitudes toward paying for downloads […]
Then there were also legitimate issues with sketchy DRM schemes (PlaysForSure, anyone?).
And nowadays most streaming services are screwing artists.
You have a point, but I don't think it's a really good point.

not to mention before broadband, who was waiting 4 days to dl an album when it took one afternoon to nip out on the bus and buy 20?

The way I look at it, CDs replaced records for me. The 1500 or so that I own are my music collection. OTOH, mp3s are more like cassettes - a convenience that is ultimately of little intrinsic value. So I buy CDs for my collection, I use mp3s to listen to music.

What I dont like about mp3 - streaming services is there are SOME missing albums out there , ex. The Catherine Wheel , Adam and Eve album seems to not be on Spotify in the USA , but the ripped home made fake low quality videos versions are on YouTube/YouTubemusic which I don't care for .

I dont understand the habit of Spotify of faking albums that never existed - its clear on the sole entertainmemt side. There could be a little more Wikipedia on Spotify.fedexnman wrote: Sun Apr 26, 2020 11:11 pm What I dont like about mp3 - streaming services is there are SOME missing albums out there , ex. Better than this only the silence. Better than the silence only John.

Interesting point. To be honest, I never thought about that.BONES wrote: Sat Apr 25, 2020 6:05 am I am the exact opposite - I ONLY play albums and I never skips songs, even ones I don't like. Given the amount of thought and effort we put into assembling an album, I think it's the very least you can do if you appreciate someone's work. If I had my way, I wouldn't allow single downloads of our songs, only full albums.
