I have a problem when recording a track having an output device selected.

When I record with my input device (a usb microphone) and I dont have an output device selected,
I can record perfectly and there is no issue.
The problem comes when I try to record while selecting an output device (my headphones).

At first I could not select both input and output device as it stated that the input and output devices did not share a common sample rate.
I went into my microphones settings and changed the format to match that of my output device (1 channel 16 bit 48000 HZ) and this fixed the problem.

The issue I am having now is that when I select both my output device (headphones) to listen to my previous track recorded and record a new track and my input device (usb microphone) to record, the recording clips. The recording clips and has small glitches every few seconds.

Please help I am desperate to sort this as I was about to buy the full Waveform tracktion program but wont until this is sorted.

Leonardo

Hi Leonardo,

You're probably not aware yet, there is a dedicated Tracktion / Waveform section here at KvrAudio:

Regarding the issue you have, the source is probably you have different devices for recording & playback. Although you have set the samplimg rate of both to 48kHz, chances are that neither of your devices have an exact sampling rate of 48000 samples per second. So to keep both in sync a section of silence is inserted to let them match again.

You can try Asio4all in Einstein mode: http://www.asio4all.org
It might glue both devices together and fix the sampling rate difference more elegantly.

The best solution is to buy a proper audio interface. But alas that also means you should buy another mic. USB mics are nice for podcasts, but musicians tend to avoid them, exactly for this reason: the recording sampling rate must be exactly the same as playback sampling rate. That can only be done when it's the very same chip running off the very same clock pulse.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for your reply BertKoor, its much appreciated.

If I understand correctly, I could use the audio interface for both input and output devices? I could connect both the microphone and headphones to it and this would get the same exact same sample rate and avoid this glitch/clipping on the newly recorded tracks?

Would a
Behringer U-PHORIA UM2 2 x 2 Audio interfacce with USB 2.0 suffice?

I have only started using it as a hobby to record some songs but would like to do it right with good quality.

I will try Asio4All but was already thinking of buying the behringee audio interfacce to plug in my guitat directly.

I did not know about the specific section for waveforms, I will post directly on this section in the future.

Again, much appreciated 🙏 thank you!

Regards,
Leonardo
