One of the things that vst3 was designed to do is sidechaining.
I've been writing plugins since the VST standard was first released. Back in around 1999 I suggested to Yvan Grabit on the vst-plugin email list to add a sidechain pin-property called "kVstPinIsSideChain" to the VST 2.0 standard. Internal Steinberg politics was already at play and this was never added. I also suggested it would be useful for effect plugins to be able to receive midi signals (edit: specifically note-on/off messages), which they did thankfully add, but I feel this feature is a lot more esoteric for the majority of their customers, go figure.

Please realise that VST3 is about as similar to VST2 as AU is the same as AAX, ie not at all, so from a developer point of view it is a completely new plugin format to support, and VST2 does just fine for everyone, excepting that Steinberg make their customers jump through extra hoops to route audio to VST2 plugins in an effort to force adoption of the VST3 specification.

There are versions of Cytomic plugins for macOS 10.6 and above in the download section of accounts, but these aren't shown on the main page since the vast majority of our customers are running macOS 10.8 and above.

Hi Andy, yes I see and know they are older versions there. But that is my point, at some point you decided (for whatever reason and I am not disagreeing with your decision as I am running 10.14.6 so it doesn't affect me) that you will only support OS Versions Y and up.

I don't disagree with you that it is not technical reasons why SB choose not to include side chaining in VST2 plugs in Cubendo, I guess the disagreement is I understand and appreciate why more than you. But then again I don't have to program or reprogram anything :)

Didn't realise Yvan was with them that long.

I made the sidechain suggestions before VST 2.0 was released. Over many years they went on to release up to VST 2.4, even without the flag they could easily re-use the same UI they have for VST3 plugins to allow choosing and routing of audio to the secondary stereo input of a VST 2.4 plugin.

OOh! that I didn't know.
I am of course curious to know what you think was their motivation to do so..... But I don't imagine you would feel comfortable saying.... I think you know my email address :)
Either way I do hope one day vst3 does happen for your plugins.

It's been running without issue on my machine, and I've had no reports of issues from anyone thus far, which is a good sign! You can just copy the current version out of your plugin folder, install the new one and give it a go, if anything bad happens just copy back the old version and you're back where you were.

Hopefully another month or two. It really depends on how many issues there are with all the code signing stuff and updated installers.

Id like to see a baby version thats easy on the CPU with just a an option to choose a filter type and Cutoff/ Resonance, for loading into other VSTs that just need a decent filter, feedback paths, Bitwig containers etc

News: The Drop Beta v1.6.2 is available in the Downloads section of customers' accounts. This one is also for Windows as the code signing certificate finally came through.

The Drop v1.6.2 (8 May 2020)
  • New: Drive Boost buttons that boost the level of the signal with increasing Drive. This will prevent the overall level becoming more quiet when lots of drive is happening inside the filter.

Is there an intro price on this for current cytomaniacs?
