Ok here is the situation. I, untill recently, have always used hardware synths. Recently I began getting into VSTis and have been using MiniHost to host them and my hardware to controll them. Recently though my old bugger of a sequencer died. So I am left with a rack of synths and effects, and a computer with some VSTis but no sequencer. What I would like is something that is rather simple, as inexpensive as possable, and can do a good job with controlling my hardware MIDI synths as well as be able to use VSTis. I have plenty of time, as this is a home hobby thing for the most part, to test out demos...but rather than start testing every host known to man I though I would see if you guys could help elimiate some that shouldnt even be messed with because of my need of VSTi and good MIDI controll :)

I don't have hardware, but I can tell you right now that Tracktion does not send time code. Er... YET. I might be wrong, but I believe you can always play your hardware synths with pure MIDI sent by Tracktion, but it just won't be locked in with time-code.

Don't think eXT sends it, either.

I don't mean to make it sound like you shouldn't use them, though-- they're the 2 hosts I use. :D

Talkin out both sides of your mouth, buddy. I asked for host advice just a while back:

and here was your response.

"The archives are there specifically for this type of thing! What other reason than for going back and reviewing discusssions already had? Look if they werent there to be used why have them? The inability to search them is the fault of the user searching not the lack of good information there"

:idiot:

And if you would have continued to read my posts you would have seen why I said that. You were VERY vague on what you wanted and why. You wanted a someone to pick out a host without real knowladge of what was right for you. You also had your hosts knocked down to three from the start and were unwilling to think about others...I dont have any current limitation. I am not asking for _A_ host...I am asking for a _BUNCH_ of hosts so that I can do exactly what I said. I am only asking to have the list of EVEY host castrated down to a short list similart to what you already had weeding out the TONs of ones that cant do what I need them to do...then I can research and demo those. Please read postings more carfuly and dont bitch about me for not following my own advice...thats persicely what I am doing.

Hmm... Synthesizers don't except, nor do they send timecode. Timecode is for syncing video to another source.

You're the one bitching in my thread and don't try splittin hairs. People who can't own up to their own screwups are pathetic, grow up.

Have a look at Making Waves (Studio Version 5). 8)

Orion used to be cheap :D Too bad they dumped the low end versions, but ah well.

Tracktion has been catching my eye lately, but it seems to have a glassy digital sound to it that just bugs me a little.

I don't think anyone can recommend you a perfect host, actually. You've got to try as many as you can get an eval for and find the one which has problems you're most willing to live with.

Like I said, I don't own any synths. Perhaps I'm using the wrong terminology; however, I'm certain that there have been many discussions (at least in the Raw Materials topic) about not being able to send some sort of syncing signal to synthesizers.

My Alesis QSR does, it has a BNC...I have no idea why and I hardly use it anyhow. I have it usually patched to my Roland A33 controller (midi of course).. :)

Nods....an not looking to get a recomendation of the one perfect host...only I can figure out what I work best with...just trying to narrow the field a little...trying to weed out all the ones that cant even come close to fitting my needs and make a short list to really dig into. With 120 or so on tht host list here and probably more out there that arent listed there is sure to be plenty that cant do what I need ;)

So far with the resources here I have made a prity good short list and started working on it :) If anyone has any to add to the list that I should definatly checkout or not even bother looking at please keep the posts coming :)

So far I ruled out the following:
FL Studio (tried it but not really my thing...)
Acid (quite liked it but not enough midi support)
Cubase (a little out of my price range)
Sonar (see Cubase)
Live (once again...out of my price range)

And need to try:
Traction
Energy XT
Orion (a bit pricey but maybe doable so worth a look)
Making Waves
Podium
