not great for audio tho - Demo away and if the style gels with the OP then go for it.
Most of EDM (which Topic creator is planing on doing) producers are using FL Studio. I dont know what are you talking about not being great for audio :) FL got so many updates over the years that working with audio is faster and easier then something like Cubase (at least for me), Studio One ect. As a matter of fact in case of FL being against Studio One, the first one is just superior, because you can resample audio files where's Studio One can only time stretch. Recording is now easier then ever was and very plug and play. Althought in the last 5 ears the least it was already quite easy. Besides that you have things like Granulizer inside FL which lets you to do some wacky stuff. And then Patcher...

and wait 20.7 version is coming up just in a week or even few days....

Also updates are free for life

If he's on Mac, which he hasn't mentioned and asking for "VSTs" would suggest he isn't.

But yeah - that would be an obvious go-to!

FL has a lot going for it but audio editing is not one of them - simple tasks sure, but you cant even crossfade audio clips quickly or automatically as you can in Studio One, and even better again in Reaper. All the DAWs I have used have their own strengths. Demo for as long as possible is the way. And FL has lifetime updates, which is great, but you cant resell - which is a huge disadvantage

Plenty of people refer to plugins as VST's and that's the word that is throwing around mostly, I never say audio units either, but always refer as plugins or instruments&effects.

Lots of biased opinions around here (as expected). I think the OP now has ALL the information he needs (and A LOT he doesn't need :hihi:)

I sisncerely don't think asking a question like this would help anyone. It's better to just make a research about what people you know use which program (because you can easily reach them when having questions), and what kind of learning resources you are planning to use.

Beginning with a DAW is not an easy task. Most of them (if not ALL OF THEM) are very complex tools, with years of development behind, carrying more or less legacy, and with bigger or smaller user base.

They will not be easy to master, and you will have to devote your choice some time and dedication.

Almost all of them will have a dedicated user base that swears by them, and say their tools is absolutely the best. DON'T TRUST THEM (me included). What is good for someone doesn't necessarily be good for you. Demo all of what you can, watch a couple of videos about each one, see how is their workflow, and then decide. You will probably end up buyng more than one along the years (most of us do )

In the end, YOU have to decide now what path to follow.

Indeed, you cant crossfade fast. FL has some sort of crossfading in the deckliging mode selection. Good thing automating volume is fast, so you can sort of find a way around.

But for the rest of editing features its really strong, its really easy to chop files fast if you doing stuttering FX, also you can timewarp in playlist like in Ableton, but you can do that with dedicated tool Newtime aswel. FL has Edison that gives alot of cool things to do, like this for example. Blur:

Im not, im just stating facts, alot of professionals especialy in the dance music industry are using FL Studio. Just in testimonials page there are 151 artist (besides many that are not there) and alot of them are/was in dj mag top 100. And 151 is not few at all. If those are not facts to you, then i dont know how else to convince you that FL Studio is popular. Its only proof you are being in denial and ignoring facts. ;)

It's your opinion, not an fact, go to current DJ Mag Top 100 and see how many people use what, than come back here again.

FL is popular, but among wannabe famous like Avici/Martin Garix crowd that mostly use warez, I will give you that, it's king of the hill over there, but I'm talking about professionals here.

That's because we don't know enough and almost every DAW fits the bill these days.

For example OP could've:
- posted a link to his music,
- give some more info about preferred workflow, other than 'painting' MIDI in piano roll,
- elaborated on what is he going to record - vocals, instruments (synths, guitar, piano, modular),
- hinted at whether he's interested in live performance (not necessarily in front of audience, but even in the studio for more spontaneous creation process)

This could probably help narrowing down the suggestions (who am I kidding?! :D )
