Hey peeps, hoping to get some help! I'm currently running:
  • Intel Core i7 7700K Kaby Lake CPU
  • Noctua NH-U14S CPU cooler
  • Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI Mobo
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000 3000MHz
  • Sapphire Radeon 580 8GB GPU
  • Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt Add-in card
  • 6x Internal Samsung SSD's for storage
  • 4x External Samsung SSD's for ... er.. extra storage
  • Universal Audio Apollo x8p Thunderbolt 3 audio interface

All of this is currently running on a dual boot - Win10 and OSX Catalina 10.15.4.

But I am now looking at upgrading to a Ryzen 3900X setup.

It's important to me to be able to have solid thunderbolt performance.

Can anyone recommend a cpu+mobo+thunderbolt AIC combination that isn't going to break the bank, that isn't going to be a reduction of storage capabilities, and that is going to be a bit more future proof?

I'm not wedded to the hackintosh thing, but if it's doable then that's a bonus.

Is there anything else I should consider before doing this?

AMD systems with UAD is a bad idea...

Woah.

I was not aware of that!

Question is then... stick with my (getting old) 7700K setup... or move away from UAD to .... I dunno .... RME??

I do not know if RME works or not, you have to ask the support, but the
PreSonus Quantum works and they have a new TB3 model.

Why not skip Thunderbolt interfaces altogether (RME UFX+ is both USB and Thunderbolt), much less headaches on the way with picking the board and everything?

I've had so many bad experiences with the cheaper end USB interfaces - Focusrite, Roland, MOTU, M-Audio, and that was across multiple machines with different setups. So much so that I ended up getting frustrated and going for the Apollo x8p a year or two ago. It's been brilliant. Has been stable and impressed me a lot.

I kinda put that down to Thunderbolt, so was keen to stick with the Apollo and Thunderbolt because of my experiences.

Sure, but even you proposed going RME yourself, RME Fireface UFX+ is high end USB3 + TB3 interface that outperforms most USB, PCI and Thunderbolt interfaces on the market including your Apollo, using both USB and TB connection, even cost much less.

Case is clear, if you want to stick to UAD, you need to stick with Intel, your call.

Post

Sure, I was just responding to the "why not skip thunderbolt" question. I mentioned RME coz they're pretty much the only company that seems to have a solid track record for latency and stability with USB.

Yes and they have mostly two different connection protocols too on single unit, so you are never tied down to one. As I sad, your call, good luck.

so...
Anyone got their filthy hands on a laptop sporting a 4800H/HS yet?
I'm cyber drooling over the new ASUS TUF Gaming models, particularly the TUF706IU:

Currently sold out everywhere and once the next batch comes in I doubt I'll be able to hold back from pulling that trigger! :box:

Great threads, thanks!!!

I have come to the same conclusion, if you want a stable TB3 PC, it has to be Intel.

The only AMD + TB3 AIC mobo that tempts me is https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard ... v-11/sp#sp

Note: REV 1.1!!

Support is through second generation AIC Titan Ridge, which TB3™ 'certified'. It supports DP1.4 so they updated it from Alpine Ridge, this is a good sign of commitment.

ASRock is low quality and the highly varying reports bear this out.

I am glad to help, the new REV 1.1 Gigabyte motherboards have Thunderbolt header
and are excellent motherboards too...

X570 AORUS MASTER (rev. 1.1)

X570 AORUS ULTRA (rev. 1.1)

The fresh new Gigabyte B550 VISION D has Thunderbolt(Titan Ridge)
ports built-in, but they only mention as Type-C :o

At this point, for my AMD AM4 socket build it's def GigaByte with a Titan Ridge card. That will be my bitcoin, folding, dev box. If it works for UAD double bonus, I can dual boot music/dev. I'll report back here, but it will be not immediate, probably next 1-2 mos. I just got my MBP Catalina stable so I'm making music.

FYI Catalina:
Izotope: trash 2, insight, vocalsynth are no bueno, I'm asking refund.
IKMultimedia Modo Drum, lots of crashes, I'm pushing them AF and can't use Modo Drum. Modo Drum, bottom line, it crashes in OpenGL functions which probably means they compiled against the wrong OpenGL library or they have not updated to work with Catalina. I understand that plugin dev is a shoe string business, but JFC, I paid for this plugin, make it work or refund.

BREAKING NEWS!

GigaByte just updated their AM4 product page to prominently feature Rev 1.1 mobos. Along with the B550 Vision D mobo which has TB3 onboard! They clearly state "Intel certified Titan Ridge" chipset. I'm waiting for these boards to come out. We're just about there for AMD <> UAD.
