We can hope....

Post

The jury's still out on Acid for me. I agree that we should've seen many of these features in version 4, but I do like what I'm seeing now, even though I can see where this is 'too little, too late' for a lot of people.

I agree with X-Bruce's comments above regarding the updates. I think I paid $99 USD to upgrade from 3.0 to 4.0, and maybe 3-6 months later I see it selling brand-new for $149.

actually, and now that it's a rewire slave I'd think I'd rather have acid than live 3. looks like my live license is up for grabs again
Why not use Live 4 & Acid Pro 5? 8) You can have your cake and eat it too. That's what I'm going to do. 8)

CORRECTION: At least I'm thinking about it. 8)

Yup, if the price is right I'll definately be using it with Tracktion.

I use Acid 4 Pro for that already - am I not supposed to be able to? Guess I was having too much fun to notice
Maybe it's soundcard-dependant?

:? Hmmmm, are you sure we are talking about the same thing? I have been using ACID since 1.0 and even participated in the ACID 5 beta, how do you enable live input monitoring with effects and record as you play?

When you open an ACID project, plug in your guitar and click the Record button you get the Record dialog window. Where do you enable live input monitoring? Where and how do you patch in your plugin (Amplitude/Guitar Rig). All I see is the ability to record sans effects. How do you record with plugin effects monitoring?
You can do this very easily in multi-tracking apps like SONAR 4, Vegas 5 and Cubase SX. But, ACID is not a multi-tracking host app. Yeah, you can always add plugins after the fact, but how do you input monitor with effects plugins as you play live? I think Sony would like to know that too and add that as a killer ACID feature. :P

I think that ReWire Slave mode could be a big draw, although of course Live has always had this anyway.

I can't really see how Sony can regain the ground that Acid has lost with this release becasue...

1) Folder tracks is simply a work-around for Acid's highly limiting way of only allowing one clip per track. So if you want 10 different drum loops you can now zip them into a folder? Well whoopy-doo! I would still rather be able to have 10 drum clips organised on a single track, which you can do in Live, Sonar and Adobe Audition, all of which handle time/pitch shifting with at least as good quality and ease now.

2) Live is cross platform. Acid is not.

3) Adobe Audition paints loops like Acid, but allows multiple clips per channel like Sonar and Live. It has Video support and 5.1 surround. And it has its credibility firmly in tact!

While existing Acid users may feel that paying the upgrade price in order to fix the shambles that was Acid 4 may be worth their while, I cannot see much about Acid 5 to attract newcomers in what has become a much more competitive catagory.

The most exciting this about this press release is the inclusion of NI Xpress Keys. It is rather telling that this overshadows any improvements to Acid itself :-o .

But I personally hope it doesn't point to a future buyout of NI by Sony... even though that could lead to the ultimate revenge on Mac users following Apple's handling of the Logic buyout

I wonder if Vegas is due an update soon. I've just bought it and it is great for video and sound. Did Vegas 5 come out around the same time as Acid 4 or was it a later release?

I record my live input either dry or via my hardware rack fx, so no plugins on the live input - add the plugins to the recorded audio track after. Sorry if I wasn't clear. If I want to play live through plugins, I'll use Audio Mulch, not Acid.

It was a later release. When Vegas 5 came out, we were expecting Acid 5.

Vegas 5 was just released about six months ago around the time of the annual NAB conference, last April. ACID 4 was released back in August of 2002.

Okay, so we were not talking about the same thing  Yeah, if I want to record effects while playing my guitar into ACID, I'll use my POD 2.3, as the front end. But, I think, for ACID 6, Sony should think about allowing some limited multi-tracking with the ability to use plugins on live input, auto input monitoring. ACID 5 is already ASIO compatible (low latency drivers) so it is half way there already. Anyway, that is a feature request for ACID 6. :)

Slightly off topic but has anybody tried to change email accounts with Sony. I am a registered owner of Acid and Sound Forge and I have informed them four times that my email has changed and asked them to confirm thsi and they have not replied once - I am seriously pissed off with this and am now concerned that I will not get the upgrade email for Acid 5.
