Acoustic piano vs synth sound battle
In some cases you have to choose between many types of synthetic sounds(electric piano could b considered as synthetic sound as well) and typical acoustic piano,so man decide to use one or another according to his/her taste, but it's interesting to hear from people what do you prefer to use in your mix and why?

Always acoustic piano, followed by the distant second of excellent piano samples.

To my ears, they’ve always sounded so much better in every way. There is no replacement.

A piano is a piano, a synth is a synth (unless you were talking about a synth simulating a piano - in that case, I would always go for the real thing, with Pianoteq as an alternative)

Layer both? Acoustic grand piano for heavy low end, synths for extra bright and clear high end.
Acoustic piano isn't bright enough for electronic music, but has great chunky sound in lower register for single note accents.

I work with numerous sampled pianos for a variety of projects, and offer a MIDI to Audio service as part of my online session work. As good as the best sampled pianos are, the real thing hasn't been matched as yet. There's just so much sonic information and subtle variation and texture being captured in a recording of an acoustic piano, and many musicians want that in their music.

This has led to me offering a premium level of my MIDI to Audio service by having the option of a clients MIDI file played back and recorded on a Hamburg Steinway Model D grand piano in a professional recording studio. See this post for more info:

It's far more than just the source of the sound, as an acoustic piano will play very differently from a synth, and even a digital piano won't play the same way as a mechanical piano. Even electro-mechanical pianos play very differently.

The sound isn't the only thing to consider.

yep layers,velocity,mixing skills everything is important,i was convinced that acoustic pianos sucks for edm,but this topic motivate me for another attempt to use it among synths.Will make a video comparison next few days.Cheers

I'd like to own some, but those that I have seen in stores are really expensive. Beautiful things to down, but I see them online much cheaper. Just wondering if bowls bought online aren't as good as the ones I've seen in bricks and mortar stores.

You have to listen to them! Usually they are sold by weight. That means the ones which sound better cost less, because a thinner metal rings longer...
My bigger ones I got on a trip to India long time ago...
Is nowhere close to Berlin?

I did listen to the ones I found in stores and they varied in quality a lot (even within the same store). There's a hippy/college town a couple of hours from here that has quite a few places that sell instruments imported from other countries, but they tend to be expensive anyway. Maybe I just need to check out some of the places nearer to me, but I don't really expect to find that they have such good quality items.

Usually just what feels the best for the given project. Maybe it calls for the sense of human touch and the emotion from the acoustic piano or maybe the spice of a funky synth, really depends. Why not both?
