just a heads up since i was the one that started the thread...i have made a decision and hope it was the right one lol i ordered the new macbook pro 13 four port base model with the 10th gen chip, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. my old Dell had a 640GB spinner that i never got close to filling up (used externals for libs and such) so i think the 512GB should suffice.

especially since this will be my first apple computer. cheers and thanks for all the input... it was appreciated.

BTW, as we talked about the Dell XPS (I know you don't want one, but, might be interesting for someone else who looks for a laptop as well
), Dell will "revive" the XPS 17. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-laun ... 260.0.html

i used to have one almost a decade ago. it overheated and died.
i might have to move later on and be more mobile and be done with bulky desktop computers and sell things i don't need like my guitar and bass, and midi controller, and zoom audio recorder, etc.
and so this thread is kind of interesting. what is this "thermal"?
so i googled "thermal laptop". wowee. alienware 6500 dollars.
maybe the library computers are good enough. maybe use online daws. hey, is reaper online-able?
aarrghh. on second thought maybe the "public" library is not so safe now. is the next motley crue CD going to be called "germs, germs, germs"?

the thermal we speak/spoke of is the heat problems that arise from laptops being so small and not having adequate cooling systems. basically what happened to your old one that died. but newer laptops and newer SSD drives and CPUs require a lot less power to run keeping things a little bit cooler than those in the past. even with the newer technology and lower power consumption (other than high performance dedicated video cards) they still can have trouble if driven too hard for too long. other than that laptops are about as powerful as desktops these days. but a desktop can still stay a LOT cooler under strain and still slightly outperforms laps but are FAR from mobile solutions lol

one other thing pertaining to 'thermals'... all laptops to save them from heat damage have what they call 'thermal throttling'... that is when the system reaches it's heat limits and forces a reduction in power consumption, reduces speed of the processor (making the computer run slower) and increases the fan speed to cool things off which can get quite audible. (whining and whirring sounds) loud fans hamper mic recordings and such like vocals where the mic records the fan's audible sound. cheers

All the above. That's why I just use a laptop as a secondary running a lighter set up. Even pop the battery off when it's plugged in for hopes of helping it 'breathe' & stay coolerMadDogE134 wrote: Wed May 13, 2020 7:15 pm one other thing pertaining to 'thermals'... all laptops to save them from heat damage have what they call 'thermal throttling'... that is when the system reaches it's heat limits and forces a reduction in power consumption, reduces speed of the processor (making the computer run slower) and increases the fan speed to cool things off which can get quite audible. which may e a stupid, hopeless idea but it can't hurt since I'm not exactly mobile with it.

Macbook Pro 2018
16GB Ram
500GB Storage + 500GB Samsung SSD Drive.
My Love-hate Relationship with Apple Continues
.
My 2018 Macbook Pro is already having early symptoms of the Dreaded Keyboard Malfunction.
Certain Keys Repeat Twice, Most Often the Ones I Use the often For Patch Browsing On The Keyboard itself.
I am Under Apple-care until Late 2021 and even as it is Keyboards are Free Fixes now after the class action, but Grumpy that I need to do repairs on a Product as Expensive this is
I think its showing up now because since Im home all the time (Thanks Rona) my Furry Little Studio Guardian sleeps with me every day while Im working, right next to, or behind the Laptop. he's got tons of small dust and other kinds of particles in his Fur and thats probably whats getting into the Keyboard.
Hopefully An Apple Store near me Reopens soon
Edit: Other then the keyboard However I love this Computer. It's really An amazing device. Just the Little Things.

My computer is a tool, it does the job or it doesn't. I am very pleased with the one I have now but I couldn't ever say that I love it. I love what I am able to achieve with it but I don't put that down to there being anything special about my computer, as I know that I could achieve the same thigs just as easily on any of dozens of different computers.
It's the easiest thing in the world. Even on 24 hour 3D renders where every core is maxxed out, I've never had any thermal issues with any of my laptops. It remains a complete non-issue.Jace-BeOS wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 6:41 pmIf you can only afford one computer, and want to still have mobility, then I sympathize with the difficulty of finding the right selection.
Again, I have never had an issue with throttling and if the fans are too loud, you can always move your laptop to another room, put it in a cupboard or stick it outside your window, and use a long mic cable.MadDogE134 wrote: Wed May 13, 2020 7:15 pmone other thing pertaining to 'thermals'... all laptops to save them from heat damage have what they call 'thermal throttling'... that is when the system reaches it's heat limits and forces a reduction in power consumption, reduces speed of the processor (making the computer run slower) and increases the fan speed to cool things off which can get quite audible. i never had a prob with my old dell either... was only speaking in general terms of 'thermals' which the member asked about and i tried to cover most of the problems people can have with it. but yes... i have seen some even stick their desktops in cupboards to combat fans
have also seen many home studios that keep the computers in another room entirely and just run lines.
cheers
