Unfiltered Audio Lion

This indeed could be bought for 25 today with a 25 voucher. Does this offer anything really worthwhile if I have softube modular and plenty of other synths like falcon, dune3 etc. I've been playing around with this and don't really click yet, but thinking if there is something i'm not getting. I haven't really clicked with other unfiltered stuff either.

it is a good synth but not really worth getting if you have that other stuff unless you love working with it after trying the demo for quite some time. But it is not going to get you radically different useable sounds - probably with what you have already no synth will - only another way of working that some people will love and others will not.

I initially dismissed it because its basic sound quality seemed unrefined and uninspiring. Future1313's ABC soundset (link a couple pages back) does some cool things, however. I'm undecided whether I would recommend it to someone who already has a bunch of synths, but being the synth whore that I am, I did end up getting it.

LION has some unique oscillator types, plus eight interesting algorithms for mixing the oscillators together. Not to mention, the push button randomization features and the BYOME effects on tap. IMHO, it's a no-brainer at the current sale, especially if you have a voucher.

I think LION is a steal if you can pick it up at $25. I'm really disappointed by how little of it can be MIDI Learned, but it can do some really interesting, weird sounds. Whenever I want a "broken sounding" patch, I tend to gravitate towards LION for whatever reason. Super modulated whatever patch? LION will do it. I don't love the presets, I don't understand some of the stranger osc modes, but I've gotten some good results out of it. For $25, you don't have much to lose. But if you'd be angry about spending $25 on a synth you didn't love, then skip it. I think it's kind of cool in a weird way.

I was angry about spending $6 on Union...

But, yeah... Lion seems like a really solid synth at that price. I don't see anyone complaining about bugs (lately), so I guess they got all that sorted out.

most bugs are gone, one is still out there, but only in special circumstance it is noticable.
now rock stable.

and the sound, the sound. it isn't a mainstream synth. but you can produce mainstream sounds with it. but why would you do that?? haha.

me personally, as i already suggested, great, great synth. the sound is awesome, for me.

Remember that LION is NKS compatible, which is like an icing on the cake if you use NI's Komplete Kontrol software.

I don't know, I just love the way LION sounds and it is not that difficult to work with despite looking/having a semi-modular approach.

So I know I already posted it, but no one responded and if someones looking to buy this I feel like they should be aware...

Has there been any word on why the envelopes are so slow? I believe around page 51 there were some audio demos showing how not-snappy they are compared to other synths. I love the oscillators and the sound on this thing, just a pitty you can't really make tight plucking sounds...

OK, got it... love it.

It's rare to get a new synth that I don't immediately have a bunch of issues with. This one is literally capable of doing all the weird (horribly broken sounding) stuff I like to do.. and (in addition) all the very standard things I would expect, from any modern synth plug-in these days. Really impressed.

Regarding dplduffy's issue of not being able to create snappy, plucky sounds due to slow envelopes...

Try this:

Use the default "The Forms" OSC.

Route an ADSR Module to an LP12 filters Cutoff: Turn Drive off, dial down Cutoff to lowest (20.0Hz), and set Resonance to about 50% (50.1%).

On the ADSR Module: pull the decay curve down to the tightest slope (in the graphic display), crank the Amplitude to 100%, set Attack to the lowest (0.002), turn Decay down really low (about 0.061), turn Sustain off (0.000), and turn Release off (0.002).

To my ears, that's really plucky. If that's not doing it for you, post a link to an audio example of the kind of sound you are trying to get, so I can get a better Idea of what might be going on.

I just tried it again to confirm, but compared to what other synths can do for plucky sounds Lion sounds terrible. It sounds like there is some inherent attack in the ADSR in lion which kills the punchy-ness for me.

here's some soundcloud demos someone did comparing the envelopes in Lion to Massive X. I don't have Massive X, but I am able to get these sounds with Surge, Alchemy, Thorn, and almost any other synth I play with. Not Lion though.

I totally agree about sloppy envelopes: the adsr can get you somewhere in the land of gently plucked stuff, the AD definitely not. Summing some pulses and then jiggle with the pulse width adds that snap to the general shape of the envelope but it’s a pain to go thru that set up for something basic as a snappy envelope.

There many other areas of improvement within LION but yet is one(if not THE one) synth in my toolbox with the most inspiring output, full of happy accidents when tweaking stuff, paired with a very streamlined and accessible interface and a modular FX rack stuffed with all the FX you could possibly need. Let alone the crazy modulation you can create.

All in all I think LION is a tough ride as it is now, it eventually won’t take you where you think you were heading but still the journey was a lot of fun and once at destination the panorama is beautiful.
