In a related topic, I’ve wanted for a long time to do a musical project kind of along the vein of Dead Can Dance. I feel way too pretentious when I try to write lyrics in their style (maybe because DCD ARE really pretentious?). Some of their songs use made up words and simple vocalizations in place of actual language.

I thought it might be an interesting approach to develop my own constructed language to use, which of course is very pretentious in its own right, but at least avoids the pitfalls of adding true meaning to the mix. And because I can’t simply make anything easy, I want to write a program which randomly generates a constructed language and then uses that to randomly generate songs. The advantage being that I can keep generating new languages until I settle on something which I’d feel comfortable actually singing in. I did write my own random language generator years ago, but it took a fairly simplistic approach. This time I’ve begun to immerse myself in the study of linguistics and am reading books and watching videos on constructed language design. All because it’s too much effort to write my own lyrics.
