do you use a laptop and if so... what do you use?

Well, the “all Windows PCs will fall apart in no time, while Macs are built to last“ bs which imo started this argument doesn't make “that other camp“ credible either.

And i don't even think you have to get to nearly as high price tags to get comparable durability. Just avoid the obvious cheap stuff if you want to be on the safer side.

Two wrongs make a right, then? I don’t recall the statement ‘all windows... ‘ Every windows laptop I’ve held in my hands was a cheap POS, but that is just anecdotal. Anecdote vs anecdote is a pointless argument. So, I brought in having 6 of the MBP and a variety of results w. the hardware. One of mine was pretty useless w. its constant kernel panics.

I don’t even care about the ‘camps’, it’s a waste of time.
but I reacted to what chk did actually say, now he wants us to look at it like something a bit more normal. whatev

Someone had to thumbs-down a post w. a simple affirmation of liking their MBP so I’m back to this kind of thread is tiresome I guess.

BONES wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 11:22 am It's not about numbers, it's about price. Cheap computers use cheap components so a $400 Dell laptop is far more likely to fail than a $4000 Dell laptop. Apple don't sell $400 Macs so they don't get dragged down by cheap components. So what I was saying is that if you only look at laptops that are as expensive as a MacBook, then you would very likely find that Macs were no more reliable than other brands in that price range.
But they don't do they? The premise of the discussion was that Macs come out as more reliable in consumer surveys.

I agree with Jan - no one said that all Windows laptops fall apart. Macs are generally more reliable, and there is data to support that in large scale consumer surveys. That doesn't mean that Windows laptops can't be reliable, it just means that they are in general less reliable. Probably due to the fact that you can get low end laptops from other manufacturers (in addition to reliable high end laptops), which likely use less reliable components, and thus bring the numbers down.

It's not difficult to buy a Windows laptop that is equivalent to a MacBook in terms of reliability, but that's not ALL Windows laptops by any means.

just a reminder, this was stated before regarding “PCs“
Also, they just fail from age (or individual components fail). Within a few short years in some cases.

Which is no different from what I posted above - it's qualified with "in some cases". I have had PC laptops that have lasted a long time and some that haven't. I assume others have had similar experiences.

It was listed as an argument specifically against PCs though

It was answering a question specifically about PCs...

Why people that doesn’t need to have a mobile computer uses laptops is quite the conundrum.
There are two kinds of people in the world. And you're not one of them.

More tidy looking setup. But generally you are correct

It's actually very easy. The majority of people only use their computer for browsing and email (hence why tablets took off in a major way). So for the occassional spreadsheet for cooking et al. why devote an entire section in your house to it? Just store it on the bookcase when you're not using it for that 1 hour per week.

For such tasks, i wouldn't even buy a laptop anymore. Tablets are imo much better for such things

Precisely, this is why laptops are on the decline significantly.

seems like the MBP I bought in 2018 was higher spec than anything else atm, I had no intention then to use it outside the house.
at any rate no conundrums :)
