Just to pick a nit, and amplify what I said above:

Whether it's digital or not doesn't matter. What matters is whether it's based on recordings, which can be copyrighted. Copyrights would apply equally to Mellotron and a sample-based digital piano.

That said, there are anti-piracy provisions in DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) that are directed at digital media, and apply to attempts to bypass copyright protection mechanisms. (That's also a crime, and not just a civil infraction like violating a copyright.) Whether that could apply to sampling, I don't know. But still it applies only to recordings, not the outputs of algorithms.

IANAL but I do follow the subject, and have discussed it with my father who is an intellectual properties attorney (now retired.)

Yeah, this stuff gets more complicated than I want to think about. Sampling and editing samples is enough work already.

I have a CP4 (a 2013 piano which is half the price and no longer Yamaha's flagship in that category, which is now the CP-88) and the CP4 is a really fine stage piano. The CP1 might be worth sampling for yourself.
As I am no piano/keyboard player, what I would do is just selecting the preset then record the notes. Then, that i think would be more unsafe for me as it seems just like sampling the factory sounds. For the moment I have to forget this and better record acoustic instruments instead if I want to start a new sampling project.
But thanks for detailed info Jeff :tu:

I got reply from John @CinematicStudioSeries about the Monster Staccato samples.

It seems it won't be on the surface anymore

I tidied up the initial post slightly, so that it's immediately apparent which sample sets have been mapped so far and also which ones could still be mapped in the future - just as a reference in case others want to join and create mappings too.

A few of the mappings are not up on GitHub yet, so please keep the Dropboxes alive ;-)

I wonder whether something like the Monster Staccato samples could be achieved by cleverly layering different freely available samples (I guess essentially a patch that has multiple layers of viola, violin, cello and double-bass staccatos).

S. Christian Collins did something similar with the SFZ patch he designed named "SCC Expressive Strings" (not so much a "cinematic" string patch, but rather a traditional orchestral tone):

Nice job! Yes, more helping hands would be really great.

Yes I guess it can be achieved by that.

You''re welcome Enroe!
We are also happy to be able to preserve some good old instruments into open format.
The sfzinstruments repository is a perfect place for them.

A little note about the mappings that I've done. They're all dry, without any effects. So it is the best that users add their own prefered effects. Lot of free vst can done the job nicely, like these...
