Ableton Live ($700) doomed? Now Logic ($200) got huge update.

There’s a long way to go if that’s the logic teams goal, specifically with the logic remote app and the inexistent modular environment open to third party products, and also the incomplete drum machine designer feature list. But I believe in the fact that logic could indeed kill ableton live and push on the Mac with a future update. Everything is pretty much there.

Stacks are cool but it's for instrument grouping, there isn't an equivalent of audio effect racks or midi effect racks that can be used on an instrument channel. Smart controls I didn't know existed, can you map parameters from multiple plugins to the same control? Can you map multiple knobs from a plugin to the same control knob?Passing Bye wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 4:06 pmIt have stacks and smart controls thoclaudedefaren wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 3:41 pm But Logic doesn't have Audio Effect Racks, Instrument Racks, Midi Effect Racks, and the macros. No doubt that would be very profitable... without the booze, tits, drugs, and social interaction of a live venue. I'm sure people really go out of their way to financially support DJs without those things, especially when millions now find themselves unemployed.whyterabbyt wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 3:50 pmif only we had the technology to video something and have it sent in realtime or recorded to an audience who could see it on some kind of international computer-to-computer network.KBSoundSmith wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 3:13 pm No, but there are varying degrees of authoritarian government lockdowns preventing people from working gigs where launching clips might occur.
But let's not entirely derail this thread.
As for Logic's changes, I have a hard time seeing too many people abandon Live. It might persuade a handful of people with low commitment or people new to production, but someone who has several years of projects in Live I doubt will jump ship for brand new functionality in another DAW.

Given that one of the world's top-ten highest paid DJs makes £13 million per year via their Youtube channel....
then yup.

I'm sure an outlier's success does wonders for the overwhelming majority that make up local scenes who are now without income.whyterabbyt wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 4:55 pmGiven that one of the world's top-ten highest paid DJs makes £13 million per year via their Youtube channel....

Or longer then 15 minutes? Fortnite concerts don't count.

Don't think so. Same like appearance of Bitwig hasn't doomed Ableton. If anything it made them get their shit together.

Do people actually "switch" DAWs anymore? I guess I was under the impression that most of us here own and use more than one DAW.
I'll still use Live for the things I use Live for (mostly collabs with a fellow Live user). But, since I recently ditched Windows altogether and haven't really decided on a main DAW to replace Sonar (mostly using S1 recently), I'll probably be giving Logic a closer look, especially with the new step sequencer - I used the hell out of it for e-drums in Sonar and it's by far my most missed feature.

Don't think so, seems like you are heavily into that workflow and I doubt Logic will ever implement that way of working, this barely scratches the surface.claudedefaren wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 4:14 pmStacks are cool but it's for instrument grouping, there isn't an equivalent of audio effect racks or midi effect racks that can be used on an instrument channel. There will always be some turnover for a lot of reasons, a big one being upgrade price. That's when people start to ask themselves if they really need and can afford the up keep? Some question whether they're cut out for this expensive music biz in the first place. And once people figure out you can make music in any DAW, they tend not to upgrade as frequently and casually start to graze on some new grass on sale.
Customer loyalty and retention is the name of the game, once you've hook'em how do you keep them chomping at the hook, upgrade after upgrade? Making them free is a tough business model to maintain.

I actually made that switch around 2013 when Logic Pro X was launched. Sold my Live license. I have regretted it a couple of times, but Live Lite actually lets me do some of the stuff I used Live for. Logic is soooo good though.
