My first dedicated hardware sequencer is the Alesis MMT-8. I loved the Alesis MMT-8, but my main complaint was tape storage. As a bassist and guitarist, this was my introduction into the world of synthesizers and MIDI recording in the late 80's.

I later added a Brother PDC-100 Pro Disk Composer and Roland W-30 Sampler Workstation to the studio for sequencing duties, due the inclusion of a floppy disk for storage. However, I never enjoyed using them as sequencers, and returned back to the Alesis MMT-8 for a year or two before fully transitioning to other options.

My first software-based sequencer is MasterTrack Pro, and it was run on a Macintosh SE/30.

Programmed my own on a Tandy TRS-80. Beep beep! It was duo-phonic by switching frequencies. very fast. But too slow to call FM.

Only after that I got a Casio vl-tone 01 i think it was.

I had a couple of D-10s and a D-20 as well back in the late 80s. My first sequencer was a PR-100 (1987 IIRC).

Leftfield Groove Rider: how cool is that?
Hell yeah, been my first too! I can remember that I sampled the shit out of my cd's and ran out of memory space so fast... Good times!

Cheers

Yamaha QX-7
I used the crap out of this. Major downfall was the tape interface. It was reliable, just slow.
I actually used this thing live. It wasn't used on every song, so I had time to load the next song from tape.

Indus Midi DJ
Don't remember much about this one. I don't think I had it very long. The internet has nearly forgotten this one.

This sequencer was a HUGE leap forward in usability, plus the synth was multitimbral. Briefly went back to using the tape interface, but it was way finicky. When Yamaha came out with the first Midi Data Filer, I jumped on board, and was in heaven for quite some time. Nearly instantaneous data transfer via midi sysex.

After having started out on one of these, it explains why I rarley complain about today's DAW's.

THE INTRANCER wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 1:05 am Around the same year my older brother, programmed his own DAW or music program in 1985 on the Atari 800 XL computer. To little surprise to anyone here...I was completely absorbed in what he had created... I didn't ever have any cartridges for it, nor a disk drive, but simply a 1010 tape deck to load games, educational titles and programs I had written to tape. Awesome computer with an awesome sound chip, which I would argue was nicer sounding than that of the Commodore 64 and obviously far better than the Sinclair Spectrum range. :-)
What??? :D We can argue about it but I find it really hard to swallow

just as examples..

But thats cool to have own DAW. My big brother and his friend tried to code assembler compiler and I was the data line checker. In the end it never worked properly, sigh
