Yeah, my use of Logic probably won’t run an iMac so hard as to fear thermal death...

...but I also want to be able to do some 3D gaming and design. That’s what killed my MacBook Pro 3,1. iMac? No thanks. It’s just a slightly larger all-in-one. Even the 2013 Mac Pro has reports of thermal failures. No way in hell do I trust an iMac to be okay with that level of CPU & GPU stress on a regular basis. My current iMac 27” gets hot as hell on top just from the display alone.

I am not a hard core gamer, but even games from just a few years ago will still drive such a system very hot. That’s why I’m pissed the Mac Pro is no more (replaced by the Mac Pixar).

Well, yeah, the 2013 iMacs used super hot 32nm Sandy Bridge chips. My 2009 27” used to get so hot that it felt like I could cook an egg on top of the display. Despite that it still never died. The 2013 Mac Pro had thermal issues because it was trying to cool a massive 130watt Xeon chip alongside dual “pro” focused GPUs using just one fan. Obviously a failed design they abandoned, just like the old G4 Cube they were so enamored with.

The new iMacs don’t behave like those at all and both the CPU/GPU are based on much thinner, more efficient silicon these days. And I fully expect another refresh in a few months based on Intel’s 10th gen architecture which should run even cooler. When factoring in the excellent 5K display there is still no better value Mac.

Intel's 10th chips so far are power hungry and run hot. So I don't expect the thermals to get better. Intel is pushing their process as far as they can which for them just means increasing the clocks a bit but increasing the clocks a bit scales awfully on the current process.

I'm actually wondering what Apple is going to do. I know they want to move to their own chips but its way too early for that and I don't think they are interested in going to AMD before moving to their own chips.

so Logic automation works between tracks, so can be created automaton clips with region automation, I'm not a Logic just playing with trial (day 87 ) user so just asking

anyway seems it's working a pattern clip can automate an instrument on another track for ex., with a simple reassignment no needs additionally routing, that's nice

ps. and sees the smart controls too on another tracks, even better

Boy does that look a mess on the screen.

don't care how it looks if multiple tracks can be assigned to the same channel strip so one of the clip can pattern based with macro automation then it can be used nicely in Byome/Triad as a triggering impulse

I don't need Bitwig/AL DAWs with super-complex device/fx chains, but needs a triggerable one with some ADSR envelope (if you used Fruity Envelope Controller in FL Studio u know why) ... solved ofc. all the other unfiltered device can be used in the same way

Noob to Smart Controls here. Are settings in Smart Controls Global? per project? or is it possible like in Bitwig for instance to have both?

Controller assignments was funky, the MPK88 has 20 odd presets and when I attached it, it was on the Ableton Live setting, this led to me messing around thinking something was broken when I attempted to use the pre 'automatic controller assignment' patch on the MPK88 for Logic.

Finishing up on the session today that has been stalling me to upgrade. Really excited! Everyone’s previous projects seem to be ok too? I have a bunch of 8 bar loops I started recently, too antsy to finish them into full songs before I update. Just hoping everything migrates over seamlessly.

Is it possible to browse/audition samples inside of samplers in context of project (while it's playing some notes), without having to drag&drop them from library to sampler all the time?

Sure, in the Zone go to File, click on the file name and select "Load Audio File" and as long as you have "Preview audio..." ticked in the lower left corner you can preview in-place.

Adding up on this, little workaround, if you want to make favorites while previewing your library of samples, you can use macOS own tagging system inside of finder window (right click on sample file and than choose tag color) and than when you want to access all your favorites, just change item grouping option from drop down menu to "Tags" and all your favorites would be on top.

From there you can pick your favorite among favorites, also if you want you can remove all tags from samples (again right clicking and than clicking on same tag color to remove it) so you can use same tag color again or just use different color tag, your call.

Agree, but there's barely kinda "workaround", if you for any reason decided to load sample via drag&drop in Q-Sampler or whatever and you are not sure if you made right choice and want to browse for another, just replace it with Sampler (in channel strip, click on arrows right next to plugin name and it will give you drop down menu to choose another plugin, than choose Sampler) and same sample will stay loaded, than go into Zone and all that rest, but browser will not open where original sample resides, which is kinda pointless "workaround", maybe only worth if you decided you would want that same sample in Sampler instead.

Sure, but only when compared against leading edge 7nm Ryzen. Intel’s current 14/10nm chips aren’t like the room warmers of systems past. My old iMac’s fans would kick in at even the slightest workload and it was merely a dual-core processor. To get the fans to spin up audibly now I’d have to push both the CPU and GPU hard simultaneously.

Hmm. I don't know they are talking about 90c under load for the 10th gen 10-core cpu and that's on a 240 water-cooled cooled system. The power draw is almost close to 250w. That's pretty damn insane imo. That's Haswell-E levels of power draw.

I suspect we may not see the 10-core chip in Apple's machines if so I suspect it will throttle like crazy. I'm planning to get a new iMac this year so I'm definitely concerned.

So first project back in Logic, repeatable bug with the clips Grid and Roli Equator. It does not Like MPE data right now on my system, freezes the Interface, hard force quit is the only way out.

It's new I get it, but yeah, back to Bitwig and DP until an update for any real work.

Well, after playing with new Logic Pro 10.5 for few days now, I think I will make it as my go-to Daw from now on
Cubase Pro 10.5, Live 10 Suite and Reason 11 will go on the "back shelf" for now...
