If anyone is interested, one of the beta-testers has raised the issue of exposing the Mod Matrix sources/destinations for automation. Rich hasn't responded but at least he will see it and know that it has some level of support from people here.

Exactly, not so much as a single Minimoog in use during the 80s. All those links point to 70 artists or artists in the 90s who had never had to rely on it, they could just use it as a novelty.

BTW, someone has made a correct guess but I am not allowed to tell you who.

I hung out with Michael Boddicker in the 80s. He made a ton of money with his back then. He played on some of the biggest records of all time. And the last time I looked, "Thriller" was an 80s album. That said, Moogs dropped in popularity because the company got sold and they dropped production. More powerful DSP-driven synths became popular and you could get that "Moog sound" from many of them with better tuning stability, polyphonic operation, and expanded features. I had a Prodigy but I sold it in the mid-90s. You say the Minimoog is dead? Long live the Minimoog!

tbh though, I'd rather be reading about beta testing of a new Rich creation not entirely based on any particular famous vintage
I have really enjoyed all of Rich's work through the years & even break out Orion or Zampler from time to time

That's not up to anyone here to share though. So unless Richard pops in and wants to give sneak peaks, that ain't gonna happen. He has posted sound examples elsewhere though that you can find. He's probably too busy currently with finishing the thing. But what we can say is that it's good and stable, not a cpu hog and sounds great!

In the mean time, just watch youtube videos of the OB-Xa in anticipation!

Early 80s. I specifically mentioned 1985 in my first post. And let's be honest, there is nothing at all special about the Thriller bass sound, it could have been done on pretty much anything. And for the record, Moog didn't "get sold", it went broke because nobody was interested any more. They either couldn't or wouldn't adapt to changing times, just like ARP and Sequential and Oberheim. All the big US names, down the toilet when the Japanese started to get their act together and give people instruments that were far better suited to their needs.

MIDI changed everything circa 1984-1985. ARP and Moog were gone by then. Sequential and Oberheim kept making popular synths like the Pro One, Prophet 600, the Six Track, Matrix 6, Matrix 12, and Xpander. By the late 80s, the market swung to digital with the success of the Yamaha DX series, the Roland D series, the Korg M1, etc. By the mid 90s, analog was back in vogue again and instruments started capturing those sounds via sampling and synthesis.

ARP and Moog were gone before I bought my first synth in 1981. Or maybe there were never popular here in Australia? I sure as hell never saw them for sale anywhere. In fact, Dave Formula's Odyssey is the only one I had ever laid eyes on until 10 years or so ago and the Axxe I bought is the only ARP synth I ever saw in use by any Australian artist/band. Sequential lasted a few years longer but they eventually went away, too.
