I'm trying to determine which software to get and hard disk space will be an important factor in deciding. Can anyone tell me how much PC hard drive space the following programs take up:
* Cubase SX2 (and 3 if anyone's got it, and Nuendo 2)
* Sonar 3 and Sonar 4,
* Logic Audio Platinum Pro 5.5.1 (it's still on the shelf down the music store so it's still an option),
* Orion 3/4/and 5 (I don't know where to get it from, so it'd be a take which ever version I could get if I decide to go with Orion).
* Protools TDM 6
Also
* the most recent rebirth (do many people still use rebirth? I haven't heard about it for a while),
* the most recent Reason.
* Recyle
* FL Studio producers edition 4.5
* Ableton Live 4
* ACID Pro 4,
* Soundforge 7
* Adobe Audition 1.5
* Max/MSP
* Reaktor 4
* Traktor DJ Studio 2 (I know it's not a production tool, but I'd like to use it as well if it's not to much extra)
Thanks for any answers.

If hard drive space is a real issue, Tracktion takes less than 10 megs
I really don't understand what you're trying to accomplish here though. Most of those programs serve different purposes, so I don't see how comparing the sizes of any of them will help you make any kind of decision. Besides which, unless you're doing MIDI sequencing exclusively, your project files should take up a much bigger chunk of hard drive space than the program itself.
I'm just curious about one thing though: if you can even consider Protools TDM, then why can't you just get a new hard drive

Both products are at V5 or above, from: http://www.synapse-audio.com/Igor not happy wrote: * Orion 3/4/and 5 (I don't know where to get it from, so it'd be a take which ever version I could get if I decide to go with Orion).

According to the installer, at least 16.2 meg is required for Orion Platinum.
Be aware tho that the full version is on a CD and comes with about 500meg of presets and samples for Orions native synths/drum machines. You do not have to install these to your HDD, but it if you are going to use them, it is advisable.

SX3 158mb
SX2 196mb
Syncrosoft protection of Cubase 6 mb (that's more then podium Podium 2.8 mb and eXT 1mb togetter
Tracktion with plugins 15mb
Audition 40 mb
But why would diskspace a problem. If you don't have enough to install a program you certainly not going to have enough to actually do something with it.

Disk Space could be a problem: I have an 8GB hard drive. I already have about 3GB tied up with the operating system and other software and files. I want to get a few newish music programs on my computer to replace the late 90s software I was using: a sequencer/studio program (Like Protools, Sonar or Cubase), a loops program (for quick and easy Dub remixes), and a sound editor, and a VST that can construct different synths effects. If the total of these don't take me over 500MB or so, I can also have Traktor for experimenting with DJing.
Obviously I want to keep as much as possible free to keep room for my projects - at the very least 4GB.
The reason I don't just ask what is the smallest of each type of program is because I'm willing to forget about say the loops program and Traktor if I find the biggest sequencer to be better value for money and better for my approach to making music. I just want to know how they compare size wise so I can get an idea of how it would all add up - so I know what I'll be sacrificing when I try them out and take it into consideration.
As for the ProTools bit - sorry I didn't check the price. I was still thinking it would be cheapish (the last time I looked at it the software had a free version because the company was more interested in selling hardware to go with it).
Point taken - I might be best dumping Traktor and a looping program for the time being and getting a hard drive instead, but damn I'm impatient

What uses up much space in the hosts I've seen is samples & loops that come shipped with it. You can toss them away or keep 'em on CD if its an issue.
Do you use Windows XP? Then you can free up about 2Gb (thats 25% of the total) by reversing back to Win98SE
Really, an extra 40Gb HD (smallest for sale currently) is actually cheaper than most of the programs you have on the list. Do not let the installation size influence you, but decide on which host really works well for you. Try out some demos.
Come to think of it, is your CPU up to the task?

Yes, I upgraded it and my RAM a few months back, but didn't have enough left over for programs and a new hard drive (hence my impatience to have the programs). The processor is only going to scrape it though, and I don't expect it to be able to handle all of these programs (I had doubts about Protools being viable because it's at the top of the pack I think and so probably needs a real high end computer), but I just figured I'd list all the ones I'm going to be looking into for now.
My brother says that Windows hasn't really improved since 98 - they just keep throwing in extra crap.

I could easily leave the loops behind - I don't like working with loops unless I've made them myself - I just find them too hard to match to each other otherwise. I could leave most of the samples behind - any good soundfonts or one shots that I'm likely to use I'd want to include, but I'm pretty much including all of that in my space for projects.
