do you use a laptop and if so... what do you use?

This is certainly a trend that desktop computers are used less and less. But where you really need a lot of computing power I think that a desktop computer is still the better choice.
Especially since upgrading to a newer hardware generation is possible without problems and at the same time cheaper (since you don't have to buy everything new).

Really? Are you 5 years old?
Calling me stupid rather than forming a reasoned argument. There are plenty of other examples throughout your posting history too.BONES wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 6:22 amReally? Your posting history here. It's pretty evident to anyone that reads your posts (except you obviously).BONES wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 6:22 amAnd you know that how, exactly?Frankly, there's no one else here in your age range who has social skills as undeveloped as yours.
I didn't disagree with you in the first place, I just pointed out that you can't make any kind of analysis at that level as you don't have the data.BONES wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 6:22 amOK, now I have to assume you are winding me up because you have just agreed with me.Oh, and the point you're trying to make behind the ad hominem is rather pointless, as failure rates are tested by brand, not by price point.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

And that's a pretty big advantage, don't you think? After all, your iMac, like every all-in-one, uses a laptop motherboard and components, so it is far more like a laptop than a desktop computer. The only advantage it has is a larger screen, which may or may not be worth the trade-off, depending on your needs.

An imac is also two separate units as you also need a keyboard next to just the screen.
A laptop looks more tidy to me, but of course the larger screen of an imac (or similar computer) is a plus for actually working on it.
And an additional screen for a laptop to overcome the smaller screen size neglects the benefits of looking more tidy.
But if you really need raw horsepower, a desktop/tower unit can't be beat of course. They are also considerably cheaper compared to halfway similarly specced portable devices.

BTW, when I got my first iMac years ago my MBP owning friend scoffed at the 'latoptp components' inside my iMac which struck me as weird of him as for a slim standalone it seemed obvious to me that this would be the case . Additionally, if a MBP rocks, then so would an all-in-one with a good screen and same components.
However, even at the time I looked around and some info said cpu was desktop class. I moved on, as you do.
Searching now I cannot find up to date info. Are all the internal bits of an iMac still (ever?) mobile class, does anyone know?

I doubt anyone else would want it. Our producers here have to edit video on iMacs and they all hate them. They crash and freeze several times a day. They can't wait until we move to our new offices in September, when they will all get new PCs.

Even if you used the exact same components you can never use it's full power and it will always have to throttle down or disable cores because you simply cannot cool down the components enough in a super slim casing where everything is just a few mm apart.
You can of course still get very powerful “mobile“ technology, but it simply will never be on par with the most hardcore stuff available you could get in a larger box with enough space for proper cooling and not a screen on top of that inside that's heating everything up even more aswell.
For A LOT less money (unless you need to buy Apple) and it will probably also last much longer.
Won't most likely be as sleek looking though.
