Obsession Vs OB-Xa V Poll

OBXA V has (from what I have seen written about Obsession) twice as many voices, more advanced (unique) spread on voices, filter etc and more advanced function generators for modulation. I happen to think it sounds very good as well, especially on strings with the spread set right and the $49 price and integration to 'the lab' (maybe 5 is on the way
) make it a winner for me.
I am assuming the 19 people who will buy obsession 'whatever' are the beta testers, as no one buys a synth before they hear it right!

Excellent Post.PAK wrote: Thu May 21, 2020 3:26 pm A big chunk of Arturia's customers are V collection owners who get the $49 offer. Unless there's a very generous Synapse intro offer it'll be in a completely different price category for all of these people. These are not "lost sales". However, for those who don't get that price, there is a potential for some lost sales.
But this makes the (highly questionable) assumption that they're so desperate to buy an OBXA emulation that they're unwilling to wait, beyond the Arturia intro offer period, and must act now! I've only noted one person, on this forum, expressing that view. Meanwhile others know full well there will be another Arturia offer at later time, and can wait..
OBXA V is also available to evaluate. It's a nice enough synth but, purely from an emulation standpoint, it's nothing more than ok. It's more what I'd have expected from Arturia a few years ago, rather than in 2020. It does not take things to a "next level". The filter code is plain disappointing and they've left significant room for others to implement audible improvements.
Synapse needn't (and shouldn't) rush a release before they're ready. Though, at this point, they probably should create some public audio examples which demonstrate areas like resonance detail - if they believe their emulation goes beyond others efforts, in a way which can be clearly shown to potential customers.
This would likely be enough for those, who care about a more authentic audio emulation, to wait for a Synapse release..
The OB's were my all time favourite Analog Synths.. Whilst I never owned one I had an OB-8 in my possession for quite awhile. Along with a proper Jupiter 8 (we already have a proper minimoog emulation (well two)), it has been my most looked forward to analog synth emulation. So I excitedly downloaded the Arturia Demo. I was disappointed. I have not bought it. I probably might have grudgingly bought it if I didn't know there was a Synapse one coming soon.
Even switching any padlike patch in Diva to use the Uhbie filter instantly sounds much better. That is how much I love the Oberheim sound.
I wait..
Synapse Audio may not be THE OB emulation, but hopefully it will satisfy me in the short to medium time frame.

Well, you kinda answered your own question for when! Though they do tend to do the V bundle offers at one time, and standalone instrument offers at another. But that's just another reason to wait.. they'll have this for $99 or less at some point, and that purchase will likely get you a $249 V Collection 8 upgrade at some point too. So, cost wise, it's a good idea to wait if you've got the patience..wagtunes wrote: Thu May 21, 2020 3:31 pmI agree in part. But (1) we really don't know when the next Arturia offer will be (probably not until Black Friday)
I agree, but give them a chance. They just had this dropped on them only the other day. They may well be trying to get the release done a bit sooner than planned. But I don't think there's anything to lose showing us features, and giving us audio examples at this point, if they're still a few weeks or more off from release..(2) we've gotten nothing from Synapse up to now in order to even think about holding off on Arturia's offer.

Yeh, ORANGE VOCODER 4 is also coming soon if people want to wait for a vocoder.....simmo75 wrote: Thu May 21, 2020 4:03 pm If I had to use one today, I’d use Arturia...
it just seems, well, you know... available.

Arturia's June 9th promo deadline is definitely something I am taking into consideration, and if Synapse do not put out at least a demo to play with before then, I'm jumping on Arturia's.
I'm still on V6, I don't have the $49 deal for OBXA V. But I do have a $149 deal to get not only OBXA V but the other 3 synths in the V7 collection. I need to see Obsession having a dramatic leap in quality over Arturia's AND - at least for ME - it coming out with an aggressive price ($79-$99). I'm counting on Obsession nailing the sound, but if it costs $129, then the value isn't going to be there for me. So essentially, if it sounds better than Arturia's (which I think it will) AND it comes out at a reasonable price, AND all that is revealed BEFORE June 9th, then I'd go with Synapse. But it has to be all three.
I also just have to say that Obsession's beta testers are really annoying and rude and they're making me associate those things with Synapse, so I hope Richard does something about that.

i think you can use option 2.jamcat wrote: Thu May 21, 2020 5:00 pm Oh thank god, another poll!![]()
My option isn't on here:
Get Arturia OB-Xa in the V-Collection 8 upgrade.

But I won't buy Arturia regardless of sale.
I will only buy the V-Collection 8 upgrade when it is on sale for $99.

I love Arturia's Analog Lab, I'm not interested in they're new OBXa tho because it doesn't do much more for me then the free DiscoDSP offering I downloaded a couple years ago, and I only ever want a specific emulation if I happen to watch a video a somebody is using it which isn't often.
But that teaser on Kevin Schroaders YouTube page of Obsession looks really really good. The gui alone imo is enough to get you excited and it seems to have a whole back panel of controls meaning it will have way more controls then any other OBX emulation thus far.
My bet is the Synapse Audio one is going to knock it out the park

It seems that Legend is a big seller despite when it was released there already was Monark and other Moog emulations, including the Atruria's one. And even despite there is now a cheap hardware clone of the original synth.
I think it will be the same with Obsession. For what I know, Arturia's Ob-Xa is not the first OBX based virtual synth anway, there was the Sonic Project one and some others.
I suspect we'll soon have a bunch of videos comparing the OB-Xa with the original where the reviewers will say that the emulation doesn't sound like it should (I have no idea if it's actually the case but I think you can find such opinions about virtually any VSTi having a hardware prototype, and especially the Arturia stuff), so people will be even more eager to try the supposedly more accurate emulation.
So I don't think Arturia did any harm to Synapse's sales in any way.
