CHOW Tape is absolutely brilliant. That and the IK Multimedia tapes.. though the IK Multimedia tapes are "too drastic" for using on the master in my opinion, though you could have one on the mixbus while mixing.. if your CPU can handle that.

I like the UAD ones.if i was native i'd use CHOW and IK.i think i'd also use Satin for the more utilitarian parts of tape as it does that well it just doesn't sound good when pushed or do the colour part well IMO.Reelbus and Softube Tape does the utilitarian part of tape processing(softening of high end etc)quite well too.i find the IK actually not that good at that part it just sounds good having it on and it gives you a very realistic interpretation of the "size" and "dimension"of tape.i think thats the part Satin sucks royally at

Taupe is far too coloured for a master IMO

On the contrary. J37 and Kramer Master Tape are very good. Just use them sparingly. Like anything, you can dial in too much and destroy a mix.
I wonder what happens if I press this button...

Does the CHOW have a GUI - at least, it doesn't show up in Reason

Yep. When I bypass them then the sound is immediately better :D

EDIT:
But honestly maybe on single channels they can work but on the master bus, it spoils transients, makes sound degraded and lifeless. It sucks the life out of the sound.

Yep - Should have a very JUCE-like look with a waveform at the top

I like them, you don't. All about personal taste.

there's a really nasty 'crinkly' top end to them which made me slowly stop using them, without knowing why. it was only when i came back a year later like "hm, why did i stop using these?" and tried again, that I suddenly understood what it was I was hearing.

i really think they're bad for the sound. even in small amounts. i know this is probably weird to be told when it sounds just fine to you—and I don't know how much experience you have with this sort of thing—but i think if you had more listening opportunities and the chance to try some of the better plugins or even real tape, you'd understand what it is I'm saying. the waves tape sims have a weird way of 'clogging up the high end' with a kind of a… idk, a faintly nasal noise. again, sorry. :[

Post

No need for sorry. It's personal taste. I use them all the time.

Well, I was apologizing because I was saying it is NOT personal taste.

I've not heard of CHOW to be honest. Will have a look, thanks. :)

I’ll have to check out ChowTape

Currently I use ReelBus and Black Rooster Audio Magnite on my master bus.
