When I saw them on the Feline tour they opened with Nuclear Device. I don’t know what it was about starting with that, but it seemed like such an inspired choice. Before they came on Waltzinblack was played over the PA. Really great start to a gig.

I always assumed they only played Nuclear Device when they were touring here. Good to know they weren't pandering.

Amen.
I generally really don't like cover versions of anyone by anyone. But Stranglers' Walk on By is (to me) so much better than Warwick's. How you can get that kind of menace into a soul classic and still make it sound so melodic is beyond me. :hail:

And stuff like Down in the Sewer. Really it's progrock wankery, and I really really despise progrock wankery, but again the Stranglers managed to make it into something sublime. I used to go see them regularly in the 80s, and it was quite something to hear songs like Down in the Sewer sitting next to melodic ditties like Strange Little Girl, then Peaches. Not too many bands could get away with that nowadays.

Oh yeah, and how could we forget the classic freebie single that came with Black and White.

And some people thought the Stranglers took themselves seriously. :clown:

Very sad news. Also a great great band that didn't really get anywhere near the recognition that they deserve. Seem to have been mostly forgotten after the Kinks cover hit they had.

I discovered this yesterday and I just have to share it - two of my favourite bands playing one of my favourite songs -

Baz Warne's the mackem slapheed on guitar and vocals who fronted The Stranglers for the last 20 years. Dave Greenfield RIP on keys too.

Actually, Baz has been with the band for 20 years but he only took over vocals when Paul Roberts left in 2007.

Anyway, the people in the clip are; from the Stranglers. Dave Greenfield on the twin CS1x's, JJ Burnell on bass and Baz Warne on guitar/vox, and from Simple Minds, Mel Gaynor on drums, Charlie Burchill on guitar and Jim Kerr on vox.

Simple Minds and The Stranglers, along with Buzzcocks and Devo, are overseas bands I've seen at least half-a-dozen times. Of them, Simple Minds are the only band with all members, both original and current/recent, still alive. Kinda sad when you think about it.

I think it's got something to do with that weird loping crouching dance that Kerr does on stage, it's witchcraft I tell thee.

I listened to the New Gold Dream album recently for the first time in ages and it still stands up. I know it's hip these days to big up the pre-NGD era above all else, but it was NGD and Sparkle in the Rain that got me into them so they are the albums for which I have the biggest soft spot.

You're not a Geordie by any chance are you...? :hihi:

Mackem
Mackem, Makem or Mak'em is the informal nickname for residents of and people from Sunderland, a city in North East England. It is also a name for the local accent; and for a fan, whatever their origin, of Sunderland A.F.C.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Yeah, I know - I've been there, and have a friend who lived in Newcastle for years who knew how to wind up Geordies by telling them that they sounded like Mackems... :hihi:
