The IK Tapes sound much better, but can be buggy with crashes on render being a common complaint (I’ve had issues - an update is supposedly in the works) and they use a TON of CPU. Softube sound pretty good, soften transients in a nice way, don’t crash, and use less CPU. The Softube Tape also aliases.

For me, I’d still recommend IK over Softube despite the issues and shortcomings. I’m hoping the next update fixes the crashes and I’m willing to render to deal with CPU.

An order of magnitude less CPU hit. And it doesn't distort the low end the way IKM Tape machines do. I like Softube Tape, its pretty neutral like real high end tape machine. IKM Tape has more of a colour if that's what you're after.

They use Ilok. You can put the license on a dongle or not. No online access required

Yeah, but if I don't buy an additonal dongle, I will have to activate the plugin while being online using this Ilok online manager thingy, right?

I prefer to have all my licenses on a dongle for quick re-installs

Yes you will need to be online to activate with iLok manager.
IK tape sounds nice, but for me has 13.5ms latency. Practically zero latency for Softube.

As Softube Tape has such low latency, I assume that no oversampling for harmonic distortion takes place?
Are there any information about that?

I couldn't care less if it's oversampling or not. It sounds really great without big CPU hit and next to zero latency.
I have put it on all tracks in my templates and forget about it...

I don't think it's oversampled but it is anti-aliasing. There is a very steep minimum phase lowpass just under 20khz which cuts a lot of foldback aliasing.

Softube seem to do this quite a bit - I guess it's their answer to oversampling = no oversampling, just steep cut instead. Good for low latency but it would be nice if they added true linear phase oversampling in future for mastering applications. All their plugins have "settings" screen but hardly anything you can change - why not add OS for the nerds and Alias Police

I might be wrong though - maybe it is oversampling just 2x with a minimum phase pass filter.

I know that Softube uses some sort of AAF in their other plug-ins as well (e.g. Mutronics Mutator).
