Ehrm.... he said he's using a mac.
Cakewalk doesn't run on mac.

Where did the OP say he is running a mac? I followed through the thread looking at all the posts where people were recommending Cakewalk and I supported that idea. If I do not quote the previous post when I am posting, then my post is usually aimed at the OP not the previous post.

The OP totally lost interest and has left kvr after two posts in the same number of days.
I'd rather talk to people that do respond...

That's your prerogative but I was unaware the OP had left KVR and was posting on topic.

Thanks all. I need to reboot for one. I'll probably update to Garageband 11 too. The interface shown in this video is different from GB 6.

and no, I didn't lose interest, I'm just not here every day and I do sometimes forget things.

No, those remarks were not directed to you but to the OP (Original Poster, which is the starter of the thread) who goes by the name of Knunoen.

... which is why I often quote a piece of who I'm answering, so they get a notification. All part of the KVR service ;-)

Gotcha. The video is a bit confusing; must be because he's on El Capitan or whatever it is. My machine is only eight years behind.

In opposite to many here in this thread, I would not recommend cakewalk. It is a classical DAW to record audio and MIDI and for a beginner it might be uninspiring. To be honest I am not deep in cakewalk, I installed it on an old notebook fir my 8 year old daughter and then decided to go with an Ableton Lite version for her, to start to noodle around with these things.

With your electronic music taste, I propose to have also a look at

-Ableton Live
-Fruity Loops
-Propellerhead Reason
-Garage Band/Logic (if you have a Mac)

These are very beginner friendly and also inspiring by extra stuff, like step sequencers, nice GUI, etc.

Also you should demo them. Then you can really see, if it is yours.

If you then would decide to get the expensive full blown-up versions (~600 € for Ableton/FL) then you need nothing more in terms of SW for years.
If you start with the lite versions, then the free synth options, which were here already named, are good, e.g
-Tyrell N6
-Tal Noisemaker
-Tytel Helm

There are many, just search in YT for „best free vst synth“, there you will get a ton of proposals.

In terms of HW, I recommend to get at least a small controller keyboard. Just drawing notes with a mouse is not nice, especially for beginners. Small controllers start at 100 bucks, thus it is not an invest, which should ruin you.
