So close, yet still so far.

Anyway, since I was born in the mid 80s, I'll skip that decade, not remembering listening to much music back then.
90's: Radiohead.
00's: Dave Holland Quintet, with drummer Billy Kilson. I don't like the new guy Nate Smith nearly as much, though I've only seen him once so far.

Hiphop is black music? Where was I when that memo was sent? I've got to get on better mailing lists. Here I was fooling myself that music was for anyone listening. I feel so duped.nuffink wrote:Don't bet on too much black music here.
So Eminem is black? I didn't know black folk could look so strange.

Don't worry, I was just having fun. I'd guess from your post that you weren't suggesting it as a negative, but rather speaking to the cultural bias of many KVRians.nuffink wrote:Ok, I take it back. Hip-hop is not black music.
Still, I'd love to see musicians embrace music in its entirety, and not just that which is closest to home.
Cheers,
Steve

Yay! Sometimes I think I am the only STP fan. And how did I forget Faith No More?! Also, if you like the White Stripes check out the Modey Lemon. www.themodeylemon.comIgor not happy wrote:90s The Cure, Sonic youth, Portishead, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janes Addiction, Faith No More, Helmet, Primus, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Tea Party, Alice in Chains, Future Sound of London, Pop Will Eat Itself, Dead Can Dance, Heather Nova (can you tell when I was a teenager?)

Yep love STP - especially Purple, but also Core and No. 4 - not so keen on their other two albums although there are a few good songs on each. I think they're really underrated - people seem to view them as an MTV bandwagon jumping band that was cashing in on the grunge trend, but they had some of the best music in the grunge style, and a cool retro 70s hard rock sound. I still dream of owning a Demeter amp after Dean Deleo's guitar tone.tk421 wrote:Yay! Sometimes I think I am the only STP fan. And how did I forget Faith No More?! Yeah I nearly forget Faith No More a lot of the time as well, but I know I forgot a stack of the bands I like - I left Urge Overkill off the list for example and Tool.

60s not born
70s 79 first album bought at the age of 5 pink floyd the wall(i liked the cartoonyness of it
)
80s spent far too much time listening to older stuff as the eighties didnt yield much for me that i remember but at the time i was listening to a lot of floyd and gong
90s altho i still love all my classic psyche stuff i started getting a bit more electronic bands like eat static,banco de gaia but my faves were system 7
(hmm a slight gong connection
)
the 00s still time yet but an artist i have noticed in the past year or so who is worth mentioning is devandra barnhat
whether these are the best or not is purely personal and transitional.i withhold the right to change my mind at any time in the future without cause for argument.

60s the velvets (the first 2 lps)- honorable mentions to the stooges, captain beefheart, -oops just changed my mind the 60s is john coltrane
70s gotta be stevie wonder (the sound of almost every funk/soul record done ever since) - honorable mention to the clash, lee perry, george clinton, miles davis, herbie hancock (for sextant)
80s prince (am i the only person who thinks that the current sound of outcast/ kelis sound like early prince records)- honorables to public enema, prince paul, pixies, husker du, black flag, bad brains
90s i want to say radiohead but their latest CD is very poor - like they are doing a mickey take of themselves - it's just not funny - honorables to dj shadow, jeff mills, underground resistance, afx, william orbit, chilli peppers
00s - dunno all modern music seems shite to me - I can always see the reference points - "its like Pil's metal box with a bit of pop group funk - ie the singer can't - tosser" is a quote of my opinion on one of those over hyped new yorkers that the nme love
so can any of you bright young things recommend anything contemporary for me ?
