Can ipad become "a sound module" for Cubase 10 (Windows)

Two questions though:

1. How do you configure the midi keyboard to control both Cubase 10 under WINDOWS and ipad symultaniously? what peripheral hardware is required (besides lighntning to usb adapter)?

2. As in the topic: is there a way to operate an ipad as a sound module (the way I would insert any VST instrument) from Cubase 10 and send audio via USB into the DAW?

Hope I have been clear in y questions

I use two USB audio/midi interfaces: one for my PC, and the other for the iPad. The audio I/O between the two is connected via S/PDIF, so there is no analog conversion in either direction. The MIDI I/O is also connected between the two.

Using an app such as AUM, it is easy to route audio and MIDI wherever you want on the iPad. For instance, if you want the iPad to receive MIDI from your DAW master controller keyboard, enable the correct MIDI input in AUM. You might have to configure the MIDI settings in Cubase as well. The audio from the iPad can then be routed to go back to the PC audio interface via S/PDIF.

As with any hardware, there will be a bit of latency, but I have found that this setup works quite well, and effectively lets you turn the iPad into a sound module or effects processor. It requires more effort than using VST plugins, obviously, but it gives you access to tons of great inexpensive apps from Moog, Korg, Eventide, Audio Damage, etc.

Thanks for a reply! Could you write what interface you use for ipad, please? I have my UAD TWin for my PC - cost a fotune :), yet works more than great. However to buy interface for ipad to plug it via spdif to UAD sound like a perfect idea. Costly though

You have been of a great help, waiting for you reply

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 with my iPad. It is connected via USB with the lightning adapter. I use the coaxial S/PDIF. It looks like the Twin only has optical S/PDIF, so you would need an interface that also has it (my 6i6 has coaxial only). Alternatively, you could use the regular audio outputs, and connect them to the line inputs on your Twin. Some people even connect the headphone output from the iPad to the PC audio interface. You could then connect MIDI to the iPad separately with the USB lightning adapter.

iConnectMIDI2+ Audio/MIDI Interface

That's one of the best devices you can own as an iPad user. It allows you to send Audio or MIDI to and from your iPad. It functions within your DAW as any external Audio or MIDI device would, no special setup required. To use it as an audio device alongside your dedicated interface you just have to aggregate the devices with ASIO4ALL.

Send Audio to iPad from Cubase - Change your Cubase Master output to the iConnectMIDI2+, or create a Cue Mix dedicated to the iConnectMIDI2+ and set a specific track to output to that Cue Mix.
Send Audio to Cubase from iPad - Create an Audio Track and set the Input device to the iConnectMIDI2+. Any output from the iPad can be monitored or recorded on the Audio Track.
Send MIDI to iPad from Cubase - Create a MIDI/Instrument Track and set the MIDI output to the iConnectMIDI2+. You can input MIDI into any iPad application from any MIDI controllers connected to your PC and Cubase.
Send MIDI to Cubase from iPad - Set the MIDI input device on a MIDI/Instrument Track to the iConnectMIDI2+, then output MIDI data from any iPad application, such as MIDI Studio.

I was under the impression that the iconnect devices were very buggy and prone to disconnecting. Am I mistaken?

I have checked this gear and it (the link you gave) seems to be discontinued, found this though:

iConnectMio2 https://skinflint.co.uk/iconnect-mio-2-a1595713.html
Found it in the producer's offer. Guess newer and more drivers' reliant than the previous version. Amy opinions?

BTW: both of you guys have been of a great support!

There is an iOS iConfig application, which no longer seems to be supported by the developers, for additional options such as MIDI Port Routing, MIDI Channel Remapping, etc. which users report as buggy.

I don't make use of that application for the use cases noted above, it has been reliable for me. If those features are a requirement, it's probably not worth the purchase.

is it the same? Latest? Worth it?

The mio2 webpage lists iOS as a system requirement, so it may very well support iOS, although I'm not sure myself. You should probably contact iConnectivity support just to be sure. It also notes that you would need a Camera Connection Kit/Lighting to USB Adapter as they don't include the Lightning to USB B cable that they previously provided with the older iConnectMIDI2+ devices.

EDIT: After looking at that further, that device is only for MIDI, not Audio. It does not provide Audio passThrough like the iConnectMIDI2+.

They do have this: https://www.iconnectivity.com/products/ ... audio2plus, but it's twice as expensive :-o

However, it does not have the feature of two USB slots to connect two computers, does it?

Yes it does, check the photo of the back and
Multi-host Device ports – use with one computer device plus an iOS device at the same time, or up to two computer devices (Mac OS/Windows) at the same time

also Audio passThru™ routes audio digitally between computer devices.

Maybe contact them directly and ask if they're planning to release a cheaper version with only Audio passThru and the computer connections. That would be an interesting product probably for a lot of people.

That’s a lot of extra money if you’re only intending to use it in the same manner you would the iConnectMIDI2+.

It’s still available for sale in major US retailers, not sure if any local or online retailers in your area have them in stock.

There are a few, true. Yet, I am worried about the drivers' support... since ios 13.0 itself somehow shook the users, so any other/upcoming version would need some update on audio drives on iConnectMIDI2+. Am i right?

As far as I'm aware, they use a unified driver for all of their iConnectivity devices. That only pertains to Windows though, iOS doesn't use or require dedicated drivers.

It's understandable if you have reservations about it due to no future support. Maybe they'll release a refresh in the future.
