Sonar: Linked clips

From what I understand, if I make a change to any clip that is linked, all the clips that are linked should have the same change automatically. Is this correct?

For example, I've got a simple 2 bar guitar loop. I want this exact same loop running for 8 bars, so I created three additional linked clips. Now I decide I want to modify the amp envelope, and I do that for one of the loops. Now, shouldn't the other linked clips automatically use that same envelope? I tried doing this, but it just doesn't work.

I'm using the Sonar 4 Producer demo, if that matters.

Volume envelopes are not linked to clips but to the track, which is why the change you're wanting doesn't happen. Try using a clip gain envelope (velocity for MIDI).

I was using a clip gain envelope, actually. I guess I just didn't use the right term for it.

I also tried adding a simple audio effect (gargle or some such thing), and that didn't affect the linked clip either.

Ah, OK. I've only ever used linked clips for MIDI data (and not since MIDI groove clips came along which are more suited for how I wanted to work with linked clips), so I don't know what to expect with audio clips.

Are the linked clips in different tracks, perchance?

Post

No, they're in the same track. I should mention, though, that it seems to work just fine with MIDI clips. Maybe linked clips only apply to MIDI? I'd be very surprised if that was the case though. DP has had this feature for both MIDI and audio since version 3 at least, maybe even earlier, and I'm pretty sure Cubase can do it. [/list]
